description
Arundhati Roy - image from Slate

This is a wonderful, image-rich novel told over several generations of a family in India. The central event is the death of a young girl, and how racism, and petty, CYA politics, results in the death of an innocent for a crime that was never committed. The central character is a girl/woman, a twin, with an almost surreal connection to her other. Their family life is told. There is much here on Indian history, the caste system and how that continues to manifest in the modern world. It won the Booker prize, and is very satisfying.

Jan Rice I saw it mentioned in another review, so I'm reading up on it. Another one I've missed--so far!

Martha Glad you liked it - - this is one of my all-time favorites. Just noticing though, your second sentence contains a major spoiler. Maybe use the spoiler warning?

I modified the text. Does it still seem spoilerish?

Margitte Great review, Will. I need to get to this book. It's waiting for a long time now to be read.

Will Byrnes Thanks, Margitte. It is a pretty good book, indeed.

you should be a writer Will, you write so well!

Martha Hi Will. I think that saying anything very specific about the central tragedy is spoilerish, ie what happened and who it happened to. I remember reading the book and I found that part numbingly shocking and unexpected.

Wen Nice review Will. It was one of my 2016 best reads.

The death is noted in the first few pages of the book, so I do not agree that a mention of it here merits a spoiler designation.

Was it? I don't remember that, but it has been some years since I read the book. I just remember being extremely jarred by the event. If it was mentioned that early in the book, though, you're right, it's not a spoiler. Sorry.

Shehzad Shaikh Hi will. Please could you explain this line to me from page 12. " Gradually the reason for his silence was hidden away, entombed somewhere deep in the soothing folds of the fact of it." I don't understand "fact of what (it) is referring to? looking forward to hear from you.

message 22: by Will (new) - rated it 4 stars

Will Byrnes The it in this sentence refers back to the reason noted earlier in the sentence, whatever that reason might be.
