The mental toll this took on me....I can't even express it. This completely drained me.
Unravel Me took us on an emotional rollercoaster. But not a good one. Rather one that makes you puke out your guts, and sway around from the unbearable headache. Your head spins until you collapse from exhaustion, only to wake to a fever and throw up whatever remains in your stomach. Yet it is far from over, as the acidic taste remains in your mouth and the nausea refuses to leave.
This book is torturesly boring. I don't even know where to start, but I want to get this review out of the way. This somehow, in ways I cannot explain, was exponentially worse than the first. Even the short chapters no longer seemed so. It dragged and reading it felt like a chore. Hours would pass, and I would find myself only a few pages.
Now onto all the things I hated:
eye descriptions: I hate eye descriptions. My vendetta against eyes started here, so thank you Shatter Me series I don't want to reiterate why I hate it so much, so....join my cause:
#eyedescriptionsareoverparty
#canceleyedescriptions 2021
the writing style:The writing and dialogues are so cringe. I got so much second hand embarrassment it hurts. Who talks like that? Who would ever find themselves in that situation? And the figurative language/metaphors will be the death of me. I would add quotes like last time, but there are so many, and I have so much to say, that I would run out of space. Just know, it is scary. It makes no sense. It is immensely confusing. Logic is just a figment of our imagination it seems. Everything is over flourishy and extra for no reason at all. It was definitely trying to be quirky and new, and that was it's ultimate destruction. It felt so unnatural.
The plot: Whenever something was finally happening, it ended in a blink of an eye. I would get excited when I thought we were getting something, but then all my hopes and dreams would be crushed. We got more pages of Adam begging for Juliette back than anything else of substance. The action scenes were so weak I wouldn't even call it that. The buildup up was for basically nothing. Some character and plot development would be awesome, but when we will get it, is a mystery to me.
World building: we don't know her. We don't get the luxury of properly knowing wtf is going on around here. Why are things the way they are? We may never know. I have accepted that. All I know is that everything is screwed up and everyone is in poverty or something like that. Not sure how it happened, but maybe I skimmed over that because I was so bored.
Juliette: I was told that by the end of this book she becomes a independent badass. Nah. I don't think that's what I would call her. Her swooning over everything and anything was so pathetic. You would think she's never seen a pair of eyes by the way she behaves. She's so indisisive. One minute she's "ADAM, ADAM,ADAM" than she would be "WARNER, WARNER, WARNER". Please seek help. Juliette x therapy is my favorite ship.
Warner: For a second I felt bad for him. I don't know why. Maybe it's because Juliette lead him on so much, than basically back pedalled all the way back, and mentioned Adam. But then I realized I shouldn't feel sympathy for him. He has done plenty of things that he's obsessed, not in love. He need therapy too. He's not mentally equipped to be in a relationship and I wish he wouldn't always show up at literally the worst times. The plot conveniences in this book were outrageous. Adam and Juliette are fighting? Guess who shows up. Adam is begging Juliette to be with him? Guess who shows up. Juliette is telling Adam about how she cheated (which btw isn't even called that, and made into something so minor) on him with Warner, and how she kept the fact that she can touch him a secret all this time? Guess who shows up.
Adam: Arguably the worst character, but to be fair, I hate them all regardless. Or maybe I only think that because I read his novella, and I have never felt so bored and annoyed at the same time. He's so unappealing it pains to think of him. He's like the "Gale Hawthorne" of this love triangle. I preferred him when he had no personality. But side note...I know, you probably didn't know this....BUT he has blue eyes!! It's almost like it wasn't mentioned a million times. I don't know why this book is persistent on making it seem like he's a choice. He clearly isn't.
the Love Triangle: Just let Warner and Juliette get together. We all know it's going to happen. Just get it over with. Don't pain us with all this pointless angst and drama.
I'm sorry for packing all my incoherent thoughts into this review, so in exchange, as an apology, here is a meme I made:

I do hope the next book is better. I really do. But it's hard to be hopeful. Just give me more Kenji, and perhaps I will overlook some things, because so far, he seems to be the only good thing about the series. I lived, loved, and laughed at the part where he lectured Juliette about how annoying and whiney she was being.
Even the covers are deceitful. The beautiful colors are only there to trick you like a Venus Fly Trap, which ironically was one of the metaphors in this book. But whoever thought frosted eyelashes was good idea doesn't deserve rights. Good day and good-bye.

the romance is so cringe. Just break up already
•more eye color descriptions. fml honestly. I have a vendetta against eyes now.
at this point, me and @human are just in an unspoken competition on who can find the most absurd and the best absurd quotes."

And I'm guessing a bit concerned too 😂

Well, I have no I idea how to answer that question😂
but thank you! Updates are always fun to do whether I dislike the book or not.
I'm also looking forward to this lmao

It’s real bad as well but at least you get some fun scenes here and there.

Lmao, thank you! :)) but to be fair it reveals more of my procrastination ways rather than resilience because I would rather read this than do my schoolwork.
so far it's still absolute cringe, but I'm pushing through. I'm glad to hear that at least there a few redeemable scenes though! I can only hope that at the very least it's better than the first 😅

Thanks hahaha, ThIs iS gOiNg To Be AwEsOmE. Can't wait to demolish my braincells!! :)

Omg I love that 😂 it's a mood tbh

Perhaps, but also, for reasons I cannot explain, the urge to continue a series and the curiosity to see what is to come, despite not liking the first book, is overwhelming and very much prevelant 😭😂 maybe I'm just malfunctioning. Plus I hate leaving book series unfinished.

Yikes. that seems to be the case now too unfortunately. Instead of reading all the books we are just going to finish this one and the third (since it's basically just divided into 2 trilogies similar to The Selection) and then pretend the rest of the series doesn't exist 😂

And yeah, I have no idea why Kanye is famous. People seriously need to stop giving platforms to such people smh

THANK YOU SO MUCH! The pain is unbearable, but at least we can share it :)))

Have you listened to evermore yet!???"
Ohhhh we're talking about TS? I just meant he was a bad person in general.
And no I haven't, but I loved folklore, so I really should listen to it soon :)))

Glad we are on the same page! :))
I'm going to finish off the first trilogy and then probably block this book from my memory lmao

It gets alot of hate but it's my comfort read really and it was the first series that got me into reading Y/A fantasy/ dystopian and I'll always love it🥺

Yeah, I should have taken the eye on the cover as a warning sign before starting the series perhaps, but even then, it's more excessive then you could ever imagine. I cannot fathom how one could describe a single eyeball in so many ways 😅

Ooh that sounds interesting! I can't promise anything as my TBR is already overflowing, but I'll keep it in mind :)
