High/epic fantasy is not usually my thing so please take my review with a grain of salt. I loved Roanhorse's Sixth World series and decided to check this one out. It has a lot of great world building and interesting characters. It wasn't really my thing but I'm glad it exists. I'm glad that one of the main characters uses neopronouns. I was disappointed and surprised to see that character gendered in a binary way in the final chapter.

Ally My partner loves this one and has been urging me to check it out -- I do like fantasy, but usually more fantasy realism and not high fantasy, so I'm encouraged to see a positive review from someone who doesn't usually do this genre! Perhaps I would enjoy it.

I will admit it took me several tries to get through the book. Moreso because I checked it out of the library and it is a popular book. I would pick away at it for the three weeks I had it and then put my name on the hold list again. I would recommend Trail of Lightning over this book (mostly because Storm of Locusts is phenomenal) but definitely worth checking out to see your own thoughts on it!
