Excellent book

I really enjoyed, “Singin' and Swingin' and Gettin' Merry Like Christmas by Maya Angelou. Like the rest of her books, this one is a very easy reading book. This book is the 3rd of 6 incredible volumes.

Her writing, as always, is superb with vivid detail and precise description. As for a plot, it encounters her days with the Greek husband, as well as her, naughty adventures and often naughty adventure of show girl"/dancer.

The book also shows the maturation and development of her as a woman. Where the early books depicted her distain for whites, this one shows a radical change and one can clearly see how she’s growing up.

Again this is another outstanding book by Maya and one that I would recommend for everyone.

Isabel Rebelo da Silva I love Maya Angelou and I have this book on my BTR. About Maya disdain for white people, I think all of us grow through time, change ideas and opinions. If not, we are in trouble! LOL I think many no-white people, women of any race, and other minorities (well, women now are a majority in America), it is even more complicated because many times they suffer prejudice. One must elevate himself/herself and choose if want to stay in the path of hate, which eventually will consume the person and doesn't overcome any obstacle, or let it go, and just follow his own path in life. I think Maya took the second option. I heard that she would not allow any conversations about racial issues in her house that would diminish people, white or black. It was Maya Angelou that said, "Hate it has caused a lot of problems in this world, but it has not solved one, yet". A big truth. I look forward to reading this book, too.

Deacon Tom F Oh Isabel, your comments are so profound.

Maya was caught in the crossroads of Malcolm X and Martin Luther King. She first went with Malcom X but was severely impacted by his assassination. She then re-considered her positions and began to move closer to Martin Luther King‘s ideas.

Finally, an advantage of age is that we get a chance to redo our mistakes I think that’s what Maya did.

Isabel Rebelo da Silva So, true, Deacon Tom. This tells us that leadership from the top is very important! It can inspire us to change or can lead us astray, but we have always the option to choose who we follow. Martin Luther King has inspired many people for good because he was a good man. He was a fascinating figure in history.

Deacon Tom F Our family was very involved with MLK's work. Our uncle marched right next to him in the March on Washington.
