Megan Baxter Since everyone has been raving about Knockemstiff, I've been wanting to read it, but my library doesn't have it. Hopefully they'll see the error of their ways soon!

s.penkevich Natural Born Killers crossed with my girl Flan? Great scot! This is also getting pushed up my to-read list

I'd sure as heck ask them if they could get it on interlibrary loan, Megan, it's that good.

Hope it gets there soon!

I'm gonna use that. LOL.

Great review as always."

Thanks awfully, MoonieB!

I'd encourage you to read Knockemstiff first, Sven. More room to reflect and really get into the heads of these folks.

s.penkevich Will do. Oh yeah, i remember reading that review now. Sounds like a good one. Plus I need more short story collections, they are a good way to balance out time while reading a longer novel.

Shovelmonkey1 I will download these on kindle soon. Everyone seems to be reading them and now I feel left out.

Richard Derus As well you might, truant Monkey! Breeze in here, comment like you haven't been ignoring me for weeks, weeks I say!, and then admit you haven't heeded my urgings for you to read this amazing author!

Cheek, I call it, bloody cheek. Only mass quantities of olives will assuage my hurt.

Shovelmonkey1 Hello. Sorry (sad face)
I'm currently here and have had little time to be on the interwebs either in the day or in the evening due to work... apologies all. i still love you all really.

Jeffrey Keeten I sit here wondering if there is such a thing as an illegal assault rifle in this country.

Now that all the cool kids on the GR block has reviewed this book I guess I need to quit being the freckle faced step child and get to reading it.

Compelling review Sir Richard. The piddle scene was described so lucidly that I could almost feel the splatter. Oh and you also managed to fit in one of those money words "blowjob" to leave us hitting the like button in the thrall of erotica. Brilliant my friend...and fun too.

Richard Derus Ye gods and little fishes! Monkey darling heart! Why do they (whoever they are) send you such dreary places?!

Here, have some olives. You need them more than I do.
*smooch*

Richard Derus Jeffrey wrote: "Brilliant my friend...and fun too."

Awww gee Jeffrey, thanks! When do you want your reward blowjob?

I think I will donate it to our mutual friend Steve Kendall. He has seemed a little stressed lately. I'm not sure blowjobs are legal in Oklahoma though.

Richard Derus Guaran-damn-tee ya they aren't.

Shovelmonkey1 Thankyou Richard, I have already purchased myself several tubs of conciliatory olives in order to assuage the pain. Actually it's not bad here, the coast line is beautiful, i've got an amazing view of the Isle of Man and the Mull of Galloway from my bedroom window and they have a great coffee importers, a HUGE bookshop check it here and a museum dedicated to Rum!

Richard Derus The bookshop...! I am *speechless* with envy! That alone makes it worthwhile. One year, I will come to the UK and spend a week in Hay-on-Wye.

message 17: by Toby (new) - rated it 4 stars

Toby It relly would take at least a week too Richard. We thought we'd spend a day there for our upcoming trip but it worked out with travel that we'd get about 3 hours of books. A real shame.

Richard Derus It's the whole point of any trip I'd make at this time of my life. I've seen Westminster Abbey and the Changing of the Guard and stayed in fancy hotels. Now I want to do what I want to do: Get books!

message 19: by Toby (new) - rated it 4 stars

Toby Oh well played. A man with his priorities. We're spending 31 days in europe and at least 20 of them will feature a bookshop. I'm planning on blogging about it. I'll let you know when and where if you need more book porn.

Richard Derus Always want book porn!!

Chip Saw your update re this winning the best foreign crime novel prize in France, and thought, cool, I like good foreign fiction - particularly often so if a mystery/thriller. Ten minutes later ... I figured out foreign in France doesn't necessarily mean foreign for me.

Heh. Happens to me too...that one stubborn synapse doesn't connect.

if it is going to be your only trip to Hay in your life....one week would never be enough. I go most years and always spend two days, and too much money !!

Richard Derus about Donald Ray Pollock is worth a few minutes to read.

Arah-Lynda Whoa! My thanks to your special friend without whom I may not have read this "stand on its own two feet" review.

Margitte Ohhhh you areeee such a star, Richard!!! THANK YOU! and what an entertaining, informative review it is! And I so agree with your view that MFA writers tend to go for overkill. I did find parts of the narrative too lengthy and to eager to insert more words and details than was necessary. However, I loved the overall feel of the book and just pardon this sin. :-))

It's a pardonable sin in a first novel. But he was so surgically precise in the stories I wasn't ready for the prolixity of the novel.

Glad you liked the review!

Zoeytron Wow, what a review, Richard! I already had it marked to read, and "sure as pork rinds" that's exactly what I intend to do.

Sharon I can't wait to see the film version...I loved this one and Knockemstiff...thanks for the update

Richard Derus Sharon wrote: "I can't wait to see the film version...I loved this one and Knockemstiff...thanks for the update"

It's bound to be interesting, and the book was already a film noir in my mind anyway, so I'm eager to see what is the what.
