did not like it

FYI saying a policeman “decided to go Rodney King on someone isn’t cool or funny at all. Also the use of slurs for literally no reason was completely unnecessary from a white female author and added nothing to the story. This whole book is just a massive cringe & beyond offensive to several marginalized groups of people. Do better, Geneva. Or just stay out of literature pls n thx.

Lauren Morse THANK YOU I did a double take at the Rodney King mention.

Megan R I didn’t like that either! Felt out of place and inappropriate

Annie Blair I can’t believe this book is trending again smh🤦🏼‍♀

Venus I’M SO HAPPY SOMEONE ELSE CAUGHT THIS!!! Absolutely
atrocious!! I couldn’t even believe it.

Rashma Patel Yes! I 100% agree! Terrible editor.

Amy Harris I am now hate reading this book because I can’t stand not to finish a book. It’s so awful - I mean the Rodney King reference, REALLY? How did this get past an editor?

message 7: by Kate (new) - rated it 1 star

Kate I am also hate reading this book at this point. This book has the sophistication of a 4th grader.

Vanetia Singleton Agreed. Very insensitive

Nikki 🙋🏽‍♀ hate reading over here too!

Katie Donenfeld That was so gross of her to put in this book…Idk how it has 4 stars

Shelby I so glad to see I’m not the only one who cringed at that reference. Just one of many things I disliked about the book.

Cassi @katie It has four stars because it is a great book. The writing and story are great. The characters make you love and hate them at the same time. Such an amazing book!

message 13: by Ryan (new) - rated it 1 star

Ryan I had the exact same thought!!

Nichole McMahon That and the random "f****t" really threw me for a loop. Like whyyyyy

Elanie Let alone the race-baiting with Hudson as a character. Very middle America, I don’t interact with those who don’t look like me, so I lead life with sick generalizations.

message 16: by Gabby (new) - rated it 1 star

Gabby Literally came here to mention the Rodney King reference in my review

Michelle Yeah the RK reference was definitely...a choice.

message 18: by Nicole (new) - added it

Nicole Prado The description of the black coworker was also cringe to me.

message 19: by Lauren (new) - added it

Lauren That was horrifying!! I couldn't get over how lazy and cringeworthy the writing was.

message 20: by Bella (new) - rated it 1 star

Bella Also the excessive use of the work cock it didn’t even serve any purpose half the time

message 21: by Dean (new) - rated it 2 stars

Dean Mickle THANK YOU!!! When I read the word fa**ot casually thrown in from a straight author I was so taken back. Not cool

Melanie Moniz-Crosby Has this book been edited or did I somehow miss this?! Someone else said the main character called every female that walked passed her a bitch and I don't recall that either.

Charlotte Nichole @Melanie Moniz-Crosby the main character definitely referred to just about every other female character as a bitch and the victim as a whore a few times. There were so many tidbits throughout the book that made it clear how the author thinks about the working class, minorities, and women.

message 24: by Rach (new) - rated it 2 stars

Rach They must have removed the word “fa***t from the book because it was not in there when I read it

Ashley O my! I think the book has been edited. I just read it and did not see this. Makes me want to change my review 😕

Annie Blair That is great news that she edited it! I'll never forgive her for it though lol

Erin Lyons Apparently this book was republished and there was a MAJOR re-write, as per the acknowledgements at the end of the edition I just read. There were no slurs and the excessive cursing seems to have been removed as well. This DOES NOT excuse the fact that the author wrote that way in the first place, I'm just providing some clarity on the discrepancies between readers. This book still completely sucked. What a terrible, terrible use of the unreliable narrator. There were also lots of other issues. No. Just. No.
