did not like it

** spoiler alert ** What the hell did I just read? I hate this book. I loathe it. I want to burn it into ash.

“Those are strong feelings you might say to yourself. Well trust me when I tell you that this book is NOT WORTH IT.

First of all, everything is so incredibly obvious, that the fact that they seriously titled it “a completely gripping psychological suspense is so laughable. It was none of those things. It was sloppy and messy and the writing was so awkward that at times I found myself asking if I really just read the sentence that just came out of a persons mouth.

And let me tell you something: I am so sick of these people writing about protagonists who talk as if they know nothing and then turn around and are the ones who committed the crime.

YALL ARE NOT GONE GIRL.

Gone Girl worked because Amy’s diaries were in the past. As soon as it switched to after, she was all “hahahaha I’m awesome I got away with it all things she was thinking about THE WHOLE TIME. You can’t stick me with someone who acts surprised and upset and affronted when presented with evidence of murder when YOU ARE THE ONE WHO DID IT. Thoughts do not work that way. It is not possible to sit through an entire book of present-time thoughts and not once think about how great you are that you’ve pulled this off. I don’t buy it.

It’s the worst trope out there, and it really just makes no god damn sense. Stop trying to pull one over on me and make it actually thrilling.

And pro tip? If you want me to believe someone didnt do it, don’t make them say shit like “I’m the only one who can do this and you know why. Yeah, I do. Because you’re the person!!! Ugh.

This book was horrendous and I can’t believe I wasted so much time being even slightly intrigued by it. Do not do the same. Save yourself.

Amber Clark Very good take on how people fail to recreate Gone Girl

Bex Reynolds Ugh you put it into words!! The attempt at a Gone Girl twist at the end fell soooo flat. It made no sense when we were supposedly hearing her direct thoughts and reactions to everything. Someone called it Gone Girl fan fiction and I 100% agree. Felt like a cheap copy of what it was trying to be.

omg that is the PERFECT way to describe it! 100% also a cheap version and something that should not have happened

message 15: by Rue (new) - rated it 1 star

Rue So true!! The author thought this was so clever somehow but writing a first person perspective in present time of the person who IS the murderer but somehow all of her thoughts are about who could possibly be the murderer?? Like no the brain definitely does not work that way and it made me so mad. One star for me but I’d give it 0 if I could

B Rue wrote: "So true!! The author thought this was so clever somehow but writing a first person perspective in present time of the person who IS the murderer but somehow all of her thoughts are about who could ..."
YES exactly!! I don’t understand it at all, it makes absolutely no sense. Completely agree with zero stars!!

message 17: by Amy (new) - added it

Amy Ok, I'll skip it. Thanks. I can read a mediocre book and feel its a waste of time, but an awful one? I cant get over the author gave her own book 5 stars.

Any time!! I feel like that alone really told us all we needed to know about her writing 😅

haha thank you! i hope you find it entertainingly and hilariously awful

Jamie I totally agree this unrealiable narrator twist did not work for a first person present tense pov the ending felt like a cop-out and the twists were too far fetched and ridiculous. It was a page turner for me to find out what happened but it was nothing special, the ending definitely was a let down

I hate unreliable first POVs- it was such a cop out! But I agree it was definitely a "well I can't stop until I find out the ending" sort of book!

message 23: by Christina (new)

Christina Anderson THIS. Also, the interactions between Sarah and Bob were completely false representations of their relationship?? Even down to the way Sarah narrates her own thoughts about Bob. You can’t write a non-cohesive story and then throw in a resolution that makes no sense and call it a “twist. Like I’m insulted. Lol

message 24: by B (new) - rated it 1 star

B Christina wrote: "THIS. Also, the interactions between Sarah and Bob were completely false representations of their relationship?? Even down to the way Sarah narrates her own thoughts about Bob. You can’t write a no..."

YES exactly!! unreliable narrators never work, I really wish authors would just stop

blondethrillerbooklover EXACTLY!! Just cheap tricks writing

message 26: by C (new) - rated it 1 star

C Sicuso Yes. All of this. Not to mention the complete lack of even a little research into how the legal system works. SMH.. it was just so awful.

Danielle Bibeau It is so frustrating when thriller authors "twists" make literally no sense with the rest of the story. Don't get me wrong, I don't want it to be obvious who the killer is, but come on.... to give clues for how just about every other character could've done it, to then pin it on someone who the finger was never pointed to? Just bad writing.

Melissa Lankford Ugh, my book club picked this stinker. I was so annoyed with the awful writing after just a couple chapters and whole story line that I really don't want to waste my time finishing it.

Brianna Berreth Wish I had read this review before I read the book. I'm just glad I got it from the library and didn't pay for this dumb book! I just kept saying...this isn't even believable the WHOLE time!

Jennifer 👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏exactly yes! How does this have 4 ⭐️

message 31: by Jenny (new) - rated it 1 star

Jenny I HATED this book. I agree with everything you said! Plus, are we supposed to root for Sarah? I know her husband cheated on her, but she was obviously a complete psychopath,

Cynthia (Bingeing On Books) THANK YOU!! I DESPISED this book! And I had the same thought as you. We are getting the murderer's POV the ENTIRE time and yet, they didn't have a single thought about being the killer?? WTH?!?

Lindsay I am so happy to have found other people who hated this book as much as I did. I only finished it because I wanted to figure out what in the fresh hell was going on with this trainwreck 🫠

HereWeGo God u literally just said everything ive been frustrsted about. Especially the fact that half the book is in her pov and she's constantly like " i have to solve this case!" While actually the logicall thought would be "hahaha u guys are all idiots"

message 36: by B (new) - rated it 1 star

B Jennifer wrote: "👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏exactly yes! How does this have 4 ⭐️"

AND being made into a movie?! The rage!!

I hope by now your book club has picked better books! Just avoid anything with "a gripping thriller" tagline LOL

A psychopath who could control her thoughts at that!

Absolutely 0/10 logic I can't believe this has high ratings and is being made into a movie. I want to scream!

B Lily wrote: "God u literally just said everything ive been frustrsted about. Especially the fact that half the book is in her pov and she's constantly like " i have to solve this case!" While actually the logic..."

YES YES YES why is this even a story?! Who published this? Who edited this and really thought it was a good idea to let it happen this way?

Glad to have you! I thought I was crazy when I finished it!

Andrea Nusinov Thank you for saying this better than I could in my review! This drives me bonkers when authors do this!!

message 44: by B (new) - rated it 1 star

B Andrea wrote: "Thank you for saying this better than I could in my review! This drives me bonkers when authors do this!!"

Yessss it's awful! First POV unreliable narrators suck so bad

Lauren I love this review lmao. So true. Also, regarding it being obvious, just want to say that my fiance (who does not read thrillers at all) guessed the ending by reading the synopsis.

Jennifer Bouchillon The ending might have worked if the narration wasn’t first person. It didn’t feel like an unreliable narrator situation; it felt like bad writing

omg thank you haha YES 100% if you can guess it by just that how good can it be?!

message 48: by B (new) - rated it 1 star

B Jennifer wrote: "The ending might have worked if the narration wasn’t first person. It didn’t feel like an unreliable narrator situation; it felt like bad writing"

it WAS bad writing all around!!! even if it were in third person idk if it could have worked because she still would have said things like "she feels that..." this woman simply can't write and she should stop LOL

Krystle But was she pregnant? Why did she throw up mid-plea and it was never circled back too? At the end she said her daughter was 8 so that math wouldn’t make sense

message 50: by Jenni (new) - rated it 1 star

Jenni @krystle - Right??? I figured she had been having an affair with &&& before the murder - He's the one who came in the middle of the night and had sex with her right? (That part made me so angry - like WHY aren't you freaked out about this!?!?)
