Goblin, first published in 2017, was rereleased by Del Rey in 2021 with this stunning new cover. As soon as I set eyes upon it, I knew I had to have it.

It's giving me the colors, ambiance and haunted house vibes that I crave. It has to be incredible, right?

Unfortunately, for me, I never should have judged this book by the cover.

Goblin consists of six novellas, well summarized by the publisher in the book synopsis. It also begins with an interesting Intro and then pulls it all the way through with the Epilogue.

I love the idea behind this. Six separate stories, all set in one creepy town and even though they are separate, there are places, people and themes that keep coming up throughout. These were the aspects that I enjoyed the most.

I think Malerman did a great job of creating this place and the corresponding lore to go with it.

For me, what lost me was the writing of the individual stories. I was just bored. There's really no sugar-coating that. It felt overwritten for what I got out of each one. I just wanted it to end.

While I can appreciate why a lot of Readers enjoyed this one, it never hit for me. The first story was my least favorite and it ended up setting the tone for the rest of my read. I was completely turned off to it after that.

My favorite of the collection was The Hedges, which is the final story before the Epilogue and what I believe the cover is influenced by. Standing on its own, I would give that story 4-stars. It was engaging.

As always, I would encourage you to give this one a go for yourself if you think it sounds interesting. Please do not let my opinion sway you either way.

There's a Reader for every book and a book for every Reader. Unfortunately, this one just wasn't for me.

Thank you to the publisher, Del Rey, for providing me with a copy to read and review. I appreciate having the opportunity to share my opinion.

Whitney I bought this hardback because of that gorgeous cover. Then saw terrible reviews on GR. Still kept it because it may be one of my favorite covers ever. I know it’s top tier for horror covers in my book. Then I saw a few terrible booktube reviews and I’ve moved it to my unhaul stack but I’m really tempted to just keep it for the cover, knowing I’m never going to read it now. Book worm problems. 🤦🏻‍♀

The cover is actually tied to my favorite story in the collection, The Hedges. Maybe start with that one. Hahaha

Gatorman Wow. We disagree on this one. I liked it a lot. Sorry it didn’t work for you.

megs_bookrack Gatorman wrote: "Wow. We disagree on this one. I liked it a lot. Sorry it didn’t work for you." And I'm so glad it worked for you!! I did enjoy the idea of having the short stories all take place with the one town and the connections between it all as it was wrapped up. I have another Malerman, Pearl, which I am reading next week. Hoping that one is more to my tastes!

Pearl was really good. Not for everyone but I'm a big Malerman fan and enjoyed it.

Yafa Crane Luria Agree with you completely, @megs, and "overwritten" is EXACTLY the right word.

AFrolicInTheTomesXx I’m sorry you didn’t like this! Personally I loved it

I did think it was cool how each story was set in that town and there were tiny connections throughout. That was fun!

Kevin If you are interested in a book that’s similar (by that I mean an anthology with linked stories),but I found to be more engaging try “Seraphim Falls by T.R Toth. It’s An indy book you can find on most Booksellers websites.

Jennifer Juniper Great review!

megs_bookrack Jennifer wrote: "Great review!"Thank you so much, Jennifer!

Brianne Same about the cover! It's honestly one of the most gorgeous covers I've ever seen. I'm struggling between donating it and just keeping it for the cover.

megs_bookrack Brianne wrote: "Same about the cover! It's honestly one of the most gorgeous covers I've ever seen. I'm struggling between donating it and just keeping it for the cover."Oooofh. What a tough choice. The cover is absolutely stunning, but it may be best to make room for something on your shelves that has both a stunning cover and a stunning story inside!!

Erin Clemence YES! I love Malerman. I need to check this one out ASAP.

megs_bookrack Erin wrote: "YES! I love Malerman. I need to check this one out ASAP."Good luck, Erin! I hope you love it, or at least enjoy it more than I did! LOL

Heather I agree with you, the stories did seem to drag on longer than necessary. I thought the premise was cool but overall it wasn't as good as i thought it'd be.
I borrowed this from the library and I'm glad I did because I love the cover but if I had purchased this book I would have been disappointed.

Yeah, that's exactly how I felt. I would definitely hang this cover on my wall though! LOL

Laura I thought Mix-Up at the Zoo would never end. I was listening to the audiobook while I was walking and getting progressively crankier as it just dragged on and on. These short short stories would be improved by actually being short.

Shauna Eleney If you liked the concept of the novellas coming together to make up a novel, you should check out Hummingbird by TC Parker! 5 stories from one town. I really liked it.
