it was amazing
bookshelves: french, history-and-biography
Read 2 times. Last read January 1, 1996.

Be careful of those quiet, nerdy-looking teenage girls, they may grow up to become famous authors. Here's Simone listening to her parents' friends (my translation):
Ils lisaient et ils parlaient de leurs lectures. On disait: "C'est bien écrit mais il y a des longueurs." Ou bien: "Il y a des longueurs, mais c'est bien écrit." Parfois, l'œil rêveur, la voix subtile, on nuançait: "C'est curieux" ou d'un ton plus sévère: "C'est spécial."

They read, and they talked about what they'd been reading. They said "It's well-written but a bit boring." Or, perhaps, "It's a bit boring, but it's well-written." Sometimes, with a dreamy look and a hushed voice, they provided further details: "It's strange" or, in a more severe tone, "It's different."
Her mother had strict ideas about what Simone was allowed to read herself; many of the books had paperclips inserted to mark the forbidden pages. By the time she was 17, she'd read every single page they had at home. She removed the paperclips, then put them back in the same place when she was done. Apparently her mother never noticed.

Oh, and did you know that Sartre got her on the rebound?

The Crimson Fucker Alfonso was here first! #5

Manny Are you going for a record, Alfonso? If so, let me see what else I can find for you!

Mir Paperclips? No daughter is that obedient.

Manny I agree... it doesn't seem very well thought out, does it?

It's possible that the paperclips were intended to provide the illusion of being forbidden; while in actuality they were flimsy "locks" on Pandora's box.

That's good for the level of interest. If you don't believe me ask any Catholic.

Robert Incompetent parenting. I bet it was the bits about cats that were banned...

Manny Attention all parents! If you're not careful, your daughter could grow up to become a feminist philosopher!

And like cats. She liked cats, right?

Manny I don't remember anything much about cats in her memoirs, and googling doesn't immediately resolve the question. You're sure you're not thinking of Doris Lessing?

No, it's just that being a Feminist is all very well, but the really important thing is liking cats...

Manny You're saying that felinism is better than feminism?

Robert Manny wrote: "You're saying that felinism is better than feminism?"

Well, you know, women are our equals but cats are our superiors.

Manny Robert, you have reached Enlightenment.

Manny (And I think we should publish this thread as a collection of t-shirts and make some money...)

Good plan!

Robert Manny wrote: "Robert, you have reached Enlightenment."

I reached Enlightenment about a quarter of a century ago. In Zen, it's commonly thought that you reach Enlightenment if you solve a Koan. Another school of thought has it that you need to solve all the Koans.

Anyway (this is all Hofstadter's fault) I was thinking about the Koan, "What is the sound of one hand clapping?" one day and concluded, "Who gives a shit?" Then I realised that this was the solution to every Koan and became Enlightened.

Btw, Enlightenment is waaaaay over-rated.

Can I just have a Marlon Brando t-shirt without his name on it?

Or some money.

Robert said; "Btw, Enlightenment is waaaaay over-rated."

Who asked you and who gives a shit?

You have to come to your own Enlightenment by your own path.

Manny Woo, consider yourself hit over the head by Sensei Robert.

Manny (Needless to say, he's only doing it for your own good).

Of course. Is it bad that I desperately want to give Woo the nickname, "Quantum"?

Thanks for telling me. I'd of missed it contemplating that Koan.

Sure, sure. You're always such an optimist.

If it matters at all, Woo don't mind none. Matter of fact the boy just had some quantum loop thing Wikied as it fit or doesn't fit with general relativity and the necessity of gravity in the time-space defined by Einstein.

It don't.

Possible Quantum's likely POV has been stated. However from your POV it's kind of bad shit to be desperate.

Best of luck with your anxieties.

P.S. Be careful, Robert. Manny's way ahead of me in the quantum world or negation.

Glad to give the support.

Would somebody now send me that Brando-non-Brando t-shirt?

Unfortunately it's actually a Brando-Brando-non-t-shirt...

You should get a cat to boss you around. Takes the pressure off.

Théo d'Or C'est bien écrit mais il y a un je'n sais quoi. Ou bien il y a un je'n sais quoi, mais c'est bien écrit.

Manny J'aime bien penser que je ressemble aux amis des parents de feu Mme de Beauvoir.

Théo d'Or Nnnnnnope. C'est ne pas ça. You're unique, donc it's something else.

Théo d'Or Bingo. Georges Bertrand had obvious acting talents.
So you fit in, au moins from this point of vue.
