it was amazing
bookshelves: audiobook, essays, short-stories, 2021-favorites

[4.5] More Professor Saunders, more! Saunders heightened my appreciation and understanding of each of the 7 stories (by Chekhov, Turgenev, Tolstoy and Gogol) contained within this volume. A Swim in a Pond in the Rain is geared towards writers but is perfect for readers who wish to look deeper. Saunders' commentary is NOT "literary criticism" but is everything literary criticism should be - readable, witty, useful and very enjoyable. How wonderful it would be to have a selection of other classic stories with Saunders' conversational analysis. I am craving more...

(I listened to the audiobook, very well narrated, but also referred to the print copy)

Anne Yay. I haven't read any of the short stories yet, but just set up a buddy read to read each story and then read Saunders. So glad to see your enthusiasm for the book! :))

Cheri Wonderful review, Lisa, I think my favourite parts were Saunders thoughts on each story, and that there was so much delight and humour in his thoughts on each story.

Really feels like being in his workshop!

Helle I totally agree, Lisa! I felt I was in excellent, witty and warm company all the way through and came out liking Saunders quite a bit more (I have to confess) than these classic, Russian writers. It would be great to hear/read his take on other writers' stories as well!

Laysee "More Professor Saunders, more!"

I echo your enthusiasm, Lisa. I hope Saunders read your review and write another conversational analysis of other classic stories. I would really love that.
