it was amazing

Absolutely stunning -- in the literal sense. I cannot imagine living like the Walls family did -- such squalor. And the galling part is that it was so unnecessary. Never were two people more unsuited for parenthood than Rex and Rose Walls. One cannot say they didn't love their kids; but they were living proof that love is not enough. They were dysfunctional with a capitol 'D'.

But kudos to their children. They were survivors and they were their own support system. They were, in fact, the responsible adults in the family. Their loyalty to one another, their resourcefulness, and their determination to rise above their situation is amazing.

Kudos also to Jeannette Walls for the way in which she told the family's story. It evolved as the family did. There was humour, disbelief, disgust, disappointment, revelation, hope, and blinding honesty. It must have been painful to look inward and share the truth with the world. Perhaps it was her way of coming to terms with her life.

This book is a page-turner and an eye-opener. Highly recommended.
