really liked it

Living through what we are currently living through with an epidemic, failing of infrastructure, climate change, etc. made for a very realistic portrayal of a world in turmoil and a family struggling to survive.

I read reviews that GR members wrote before we were hit with a pandemic across the world, massive illness and deaths, infrastructure breakdowns, climate change, political unrest, racial and gender equality protests, tsunamis, wildfires, melting glaciers, a failing leadership, economy challenges, and I wonder if their reviews would change based on what we all are going through right now.

This book is based on a teenaged girls daily life journaling during the time when an asteroid first hit the moon, resulting in all kinds of catastrophic injuries to the earth and its people. I know people are currently keeping journals from their lives over this past pandemic year and really, would it be so much different from this book depending on where you lived and what your resources were and how smart/creative you might be in your quest to survive?

After turning the last page and going to bed, I could not sleep at all ruminating of many of my experiences and their family’s experiences. I was stunned by the similarities.

At the time of this post-apopolyptic publication, it probably never entered anyone’s minds that we might find ourselves in a similar world predicament in 2020, fighting for our lives and trying so hard to keep a vision of hope and ultimately return to some kind of normalcy.

I understand this book is part of a series and will read the others in due time.

ReadAlongWithSue recovering from a stroke★⋆. ࿐࿔ Very brave reading this at this time. Who’d have thought the similarities today

Libby It sure does make one pause because our world has become so different in ways we never thought about before. Excellent review, Chris :-)

Chris Sue, it truly was very eerie to read! As much as I didn’t want to read it when it started getting too close to home, I could not put it down. I absolutely HAD to know the final outcome! And as they saw hope for their family in the end, it just made my current hope more stronger.

Chris Libby, I saw that you be read this one earlier. Who would have thought we’d be in a similar predicament. The only thing that’s different is in the story the moon got hit by an asteroid. We got hit by a virus. The behaviors pretty much mirrored each other.

I liked the mom who got things in gear when things started to fall apart and got money, gas and set everyone off to stock up on certain groceries, medications, and even hit the local gift shop to get candles! Ha! I thought I was somewhat savvy at the beginning of the pandemic but here now, you can learn some survival tips from this story.

I have a friend who is a survivalist with food stock to get her through about 6 months if something happened to the food supply. Stories like this one make you think about the unpredictable scenarios, and at the beginning of the pandemic here, the grocery shelves were definitely lacking. Medications would be a big hurdle and so would water for many. I admire the savvy ones, Chris.

Therese Nice review, Chris! Sounds like an interesting story for our times.

Chris Thanks, Therese! I have to take a break before reading the others in the series. 😐

Christine Wow. I do not do dystopian books. But maybe I should do this one. Onto my out-of-the-box shelf.

Chris Hi Christine, I usually don’t do these types either! However, the timing of finding this one and as a kindle special offer had me curious. And wow! Did it ever hit home after the pandemic year we’ve had/are having.

These people tried to prepare and grow their own garden, for example, to ensure a food source, however, the moon (which was the cause of this earthly mess) was at such a tilt over the earth after it got knocked up in space, did not provide much sun and so there went their important back up plan! Every time they took a jar of dwindling canned vegetables out to eat, you could literally feel their pain and desperation. This story was well written. I can’t wait to hear what you think of it after reading!

Yes, I can imagine reading this during our own pandemic would heighten the intensity of this one, Chris. Maybe I should wait a couple of years before reading it. But then, who knows what kind of crisis we might be going through then!!
