RandomAnthony Really? I loved this guy as a teenager and in my early twenties. I think I read all of his work.

Michelle I can't remember whether or not I've read it before. Damn shitty memory.

message 3: by [deleted user] (new)

I can't remember either. I know I read Steppenwolf, but I can't remember if I read this one. (They're all just about eastern religion, aren't they?)

message 4: by RandomAnthony (last edited Nov 24, 2008 05:47PM) (new)

RandomAnthony This is the one that focuses on a follower of Buddha. No, they're not all about Eastern religion...although most of the big ones (Glass Bead Game, for example) have some connection there.

Catarina good book...i reed it when i was teen girl, because that was a modern book...but Hesse is more complicated...

贵茅濒颈虫 This was one of his best, I thought.

Two stars, Boobs? Good to know... I never really wanted to read this based on the theme of the book and my irritation with Steppenwolf and Narcissus and Goldmund. I don't think Hesse is for me...

Dave Russell Actually I thought this was the worst of the five of his I've read. Parts of it read like a series of fortune cookies strung together.

Malbadeen Michelle, today I love you anew!

Michelle It was hard to force myself to finish it. Generally, I try not to abandon books. This one was short, so I kept on.

At least I remembered that I hadn't read it before. Either that, or I blocked it out.

message 11: by RandomAnthony (new)

RandomAnthony It's not his best one, I agree. I didn't want to say this when you were reading it, but I remember it as popular with teachers who work with special needs kids because the language is so simple. So, uh, you're in good company, reading it...

I'm hesitant to go back and re-read his work because I loved it when I was a teenager and I don't want to be disappointed by returning to Hesse and finding his work doesn't hold up. I already went through that some with Vonnegut when I tried to re-read Breakfast of Champions and found out it sucked.

Michelle RA, are you calling me special needs?!

David Katzman oooh, ouch. this book is not about one of the followers of Buddha, it is simply a retelling of one version/story of the life of Buddha. Most style has been removed from the telling, which, although i haven't read any other Hesse to compare it to, seems very appropriate. It's a rather humble book. It didn't need to work very hard for me to love it.

贵茅濒颈虫 Yes! I agree.

Dave Russell this book is not about one of the followers of Buddha, it is simply a retelling of one version/story of the life of Buddha.

But doesn't Siddhartha meet the Buddha in the book? I remember being confused by that because I thought Siddhartha was the Buddha. Am I remembering this book correctly? Does anybody know what I'm talking about? Can't anybody tell me what Christmas is all about?

David Katzman LOoK aWAy FrOm THe LiGhT!!!

message 17: by RandomAnthony (new)

RandomAnthony Well, Michelle, you do need a stool to reach high things...

message 18: by David (last edited Dec 02, 2008 06:31PM) (new) - rated it 5 stars

David Katzman And re: dave 15. My bad, I peeked at the book to refresh myself to the story and you're right.it's the story of A buddha not The buddha. We are all potentially buddha but this story is a fellow with the same first name who takes his own journey to. Enlightenment.

Matthieu It would appear that we share the same sentiments about this book, Michelle.

message 20: by Drew (new) - rated it 5 stars

Drew P The funny thing about the review: if you take the sarcasm out, you reach the real meaning pretty quickly!

Jacqueline "Siddhartha" is one of my favorite books, but this review made me laugh! Quite frankly, it's totally true. :)

message 22: by Toki (new) - rated it 2 stars

Toki Bwhaha. Best review ever.

Michelle Wow...my email never notified me of the last three comments. Thanks, you guys.

Tatiana LOL:)

Clarice Haha! You encapsulated the book right there :)

message 26: by Harrylimeaol.com (new)

Harrylimeaol.com Michelle:

Why would an intellectual light weight even attempt to read a book like this? Then you start a Dumber and Dumber comment thread with such posts coming from Samantha and Tatiana.
Clearly the book went over your pin head like a whistle in the dark.
Please reserve your comments for chick lit and reality shows.

Michelle MY FIRST TROLL! I'm so excited! My 'pin head' is spinning (at about 4MPH).

欧宝娱乐 trolls will come and go, but you, Harrylimeaol.com, will always hold a special place in my heart, but not just because Harry Lime was a character in one of my favorite movies. I will remember you in the same way I remember the guy with whom I lost my virginity.

Thank you for your comment.

Also, omg ur like sooo funny. this buk sucked. i knew i shud have gone 2 c the justin bieber movie lol

message 28: by David (new)

David Oooh, please troll me next, Harrylimeaol.com! I'm a pinhead and an intellectual lightweight too! (But not light enough to know that 'pinhead' and 'lightweight' are each one word.)

Also, please explain the whistle in the dark simile. I have no idea what that even means.

If you're Esteban, you could have done much better than this, by the way.

Laura I loved this book, but 'Blah blah blah Om.' made me LOL

Kenny Bell Michelle i bet you have a great personality(no pun intended).I mean the way you dont cae about being formal for other peoples sake, I wish i could stop worrying about how people view me so much and just say" blah"!

Matthieu Where's the pun, Kenny?

Kenny Bell Matthieu wrote: "Where's the pun, Kenny?"

What the hell is a Pun... I thought pun was a joke? I sounded kind of sarcastic when i said great personality..>

message 33: by Michelle (last edited Nov 10, 2011 08:23AM) (new) - rated it 2 stars

Michelle A pun is more of a play on words. Yes, for a moment there I thought you were being sarcastic, but I do have a great personality so I chose to believe you were being sincere.

Edit* This is just a silly book-themed social networking website. You definitely shouldn't care what people think of your reviews. Namaste.
: )

Kenny Bell How is it a "social networking website", Michelle. You sound so smart by the way. *blushing*

Robert Mccarthy Oh miss Michelle you do drip with venom.

Niraj Michelle! I believe I didn't liked the book because u may not read about buddha, his life, his teachings, Buddhism and about Brahmins, their significance and role in Indian society. Just an idea was enough.
The book is written with these subjects as the background. And it would be difficult to comprehend and enjoy it unless you have the understanding of context and background with which it has been written.

Afterall, enjoyment and entertainment is not the only purpose of reading books. Knowledge, enlightenment and learning are more significant. That's why people read lengthy classics like das kapital, wealth of nation, origin of species, etc. Yet they enjoy. Because their purpose is knowledge and learning.

I would recommend michelle and other readers to read briefly about Buddha, Buddhism, brahmanism and Indian society before reading Siddhartha. It's then that you will acknowledge it's worth. Believe me it's a wonderful book.

Michelle Thank you for your comment, Niraj! I will keep that in mind.

Dariennefye de Vasari i presume u didn't get the message of the story..

Kenny Bell Hey Hey! Dariennefye, what do you do for a living. Im so confused on what i want to be!?

message 41: by Mike (new) - rated it 2 stars

Mike Walton I wish I had just read this review instead of the actual book. It's pretty much the same thing, but shorter.

Michelle I aim to please.

(Thanks, Mike. You don't know how much I dread coming to this thread when I get a comment notification. My first thought is usually, 'Okay, who is going to bitch me out now?')
