it was ok

Here is my video for the 8 Reasons The Lost Apothecary Disappointed:

That video is also good for a few laughs - I was in a silly mood.

There are two rules. One: Poison cannot be used against another woman. Two: The name of the victim and the poisoner must be recorded in a book. The apothecary is used to helping out women when she is surprised to see a young woman entering her shop one day. As the apothecary gets to know the young woman, another threatens her very existence.

When I picked up this book, I thought it would be something similar to Dexter-style justice; however, there wasn't enough of that and too much Caroline. Sweet Caroline who was constantly whining about her husband James. Every single problem in her life was somehow the fault of James. I didn't care for any of the sections coming from Caroline.

But seriously....watch the video! It's hilarious!

Her cell phone must also be from the 1790's - The "British" accents were the worst on the audiobook. So disappointed! Where is the female Dexter? I feel like I need a tincture for my disappointment."

Namita Oh no! I’ll watch the vid after reading the book, I still want to read it with an open mind. Sorry to hear you didn’t like it though!

Kat (Books are Comfort Food) The ratings for this book seem all over the place. I’m thinking it won’t be as good as I am hoping. Excellent review, Lisa. I wish you could have enjoyed it more, but you listed things. Dry well with your review.

Lisa of Troy Thanks, Kat! It wasn't the worst book I have ever read, and at least it gave me some source material for a funny booktube video and I haven't seen too many of those. Maybe it was magic? LOL!

message 4: by Liz (new) - rated it 3 stars

Liz I agree. The sections with Caroline were no fun.

Krista Loved your video! I just finished the novel this morning and felt much the same - would only add the historical inaccuracies ("okay" is NOT ok for an 18th century speaker) to my version of your rant.

Christian I agree with the bit about James. Felt like a lazy punching back character with no real investment at all. Like he was written after researching a Cosmo magazine.

Christian *punching bag character. Oof.

Kristine Lisa, I watched your uTube video and it did make me laugh 😂 a lot. I liked the book better then you, but I find so many thriller/mystery/psychological mind books ask me to suspend all rational belief. It’s just a given and wish this was not the case. So, funny with the flashlight and did obviously notice how she suddenly finds the Apothecary a bit ridiculous. I think I was in the mood for this book when I read it. I have gone through a divorce and 4 years later my ex still calls only to scream and curse at me. Right before he decided to start the divorce, we went on a family trip to London. So, the London part was special, too. The London Eye was great to see, sure knew what The Tube was (huh? The Underground) and was exhausted b/c there is so much to do in London, especially if you love books, history, and art. Unfortunately, I did not stumble upon The Apothecary, which probably was a good thing, all things considered. When Cambridge easily accepts me without any references and my qualifications are Reading Books, please let me know. 😣

Debbie W. Great video, Lisa! I loved the part about the phone's flashlight! Personally, Caroline's section was pointless and I think your idea of a "Dexter-style justice" would have been more intriguing! Fantastic review all around!

Penelope Wow, we are twinning! I recently read this book and also gave it a 2 star rating. Such potential in the premise but the book itself was not great.

message 11: by Candy (new)

Candy Thank you for pointing out how sometimes the worst books get the most ratings on ŷ. I seriously feel like I either totally missed the point, or did I read another book?

message 12: by Mona (new) - rated it 3 stars

Mona Funny vid, Lisa! While I didn’t hate Caroline as much as you did, I do agree that this book was overhyped, overrated, and disappointing. I also didn’t care for the audio, and I agree that the “British accents were appallingly bad. I’m glad you had the guts to go against majority opinion on ŷ.

message 13: by Lisa (new)

Lisa This book has mixed reviews sorry thi was a dud onto the next one great review Lisa. 😊

message 14: by Rue (new) - rated it 2 stars

Rue Agreed! There was such potential that went unrealized. I could never understand all the rave reviews.

message 15: by Cathy (new)

Cathy S. I’m disappointed I really was hoping for some positive reviews. Oh well one less on the TBR pile! Great review!

Elena This one killed me. I love how she, of all people, magically found a door that just hadn't been touched since 1790. Also, the fact that she was a British History major in the U.S. Does that program even exist? Why not be just a regular history major?

Lisa of Troy Len wrote: "This one killed me. I love how she, of all people, magically found a door that just hadn't been touched since 1790. Also, the fact that she was a British History major in the U.S. Does that program..."

Exactly! She found the door with no effort but magically it hasn't been opened for hundreds of years? Yeah OK.......

message 18: by Ivo (new)

Ivo Ferry Haas on youtu.be..."horrible".... 😂
Make laugh so much. This description is enough for me 😝

Annette Lisa, I enjoyed the past timeline. The modern timeline, which takes most of the story wasn't for me :)

KATHY And why would Nella write down all of the names of the people who bought poison and then the people that they killed as if this is some kind of favor so that no one will forget them in history Yeah, and you run off and die somewhere while the police come and get these people and hang them! Thanks Nella!!

message 21: by Kruger (new) - added it

Kruger Brent I loved your video. It was so much fun watching you talk about it.

Susie Lisa, I agreed with your review and KATHY, I totally agree with the questioning of WHY did Nella write the women’s names down in a registers…for history?!?! This made no sense to me either. Bugged me the whole book through!

Reading Rachel I really liked this book 😂 but I see the faults. I'm excited to see what else she comes up with.

Thushari Gooneratne Caroline ruined this book for me. I gave it a generous three but upon future review, I may downgrade to two.

Melissa I really loved this novel, it gave me all the feels. I guess that’s why reading is so subjective.

ReadAlongWithSue recovering from a stroke★⋆. ࿐࿔ I loved this one. It was different, sorry you didn’t enjoy it Lisa❣️

Rachel Hanes I just went to your YouTube channel (and I plan on going back more often!). So glad I can put a face and voice to all your reviews now! You are awesome!!

message 28: by Valentina (new) - added it

Valentina Tsoneva Great video! I love how you pay attention to the scenes and the flaws in the plot or the character.

message 29: by Valentina (new) - added it

Valentina Tsoneva I would be interested to read your review of Anna Karenina. I read it a long time ago, in college.

message 30: by Pisces51 (new)

Pisces51 I don't read this author. Your review is incisive. I am all over vigilante justice, but mostly only when only the guilty are rubbed out. I did love They Never Learn. But I digress. Good review. Can't listen to it though because the TV is being used.

message 31: by Christine (new)

Christine Whelp, you saved me days in reading this. I’ve read other comments that British terminology isn’t even used 🤷🏻‍♀ Plus…I have a thing about authors giving themselves 5 stars in the reviews. Fine, have something to add or you want to give some background on how the story came about is great but the author doesn’t have to rate her own work. That’s a big turn off for me.

Anna Reads Mysteries Aw - same, girl, same.

Blurbie Just 8?

amy dawson Someone commenting on this review that they loved the book it gave them all the feels pretty much disqualifies their opinion
