Win (Windsor Horne Lockwood III, #1) By Harlan Coben
Audiobook - 10:35 Hours - Narrated by Steven Weber

My Listening Activity:
Nice to hear a bit more about the enigmatic Win. He was always a favourite of mine when reading or listening to the Myron Bolitar books. I just hope his wealth, charm and fighting abilities don't wear a bit thin ... May 02, 2021 11:16PM

My Review:
I am familiar with the character of “Win because I have read/listened to 10 of the 11 “Myron Bolitar novels written by Harlan Coben and I so wanted to like this new iteration of “Win (Windsor Horne Lockwood III), but I was disappointed. His narcissistic, self-entitled behaviour, coupled with his violent, vigilantist justice, worked very well in his relatively brief appearances within the Myron Bolitar stories, but as a main protagonist, Win’s character becomes a vain, arrogant and underwhelming bore.

I became tired of the multiple characters, the jumble-mumble of Steven Weber’s narration, and the first-person POV, which included, at times, speaking directly and personally to the reader.

Paula K A frank and understandable critique, Terence! I gave up on Coben a year or two ago...don’t read his stuff anymore...I do remember Win as a minor character and did like him in one of the books I read...I can see, however, that as the main character he would be over the top...

Thank you very much, Paula!
I have 30 Harlan Coben audiobooks, and now, after "Win", I have listened to 16 of them. Like you, I have not been motivated to listen to Coben for several years, but I thought I just had to listen to "Win".
I have way too many other books to listen to and I keep (ab)using my Audible account, particularly when they make the "buy three more credits for an even cheaper price" offer when I'm down to just one credit. It gets me every time😄!

Lata I was waiting to read this book, as I had liked Win in the Bolitar series. But reading your review and others, he seems to be better as a sidekick than as the main character.

I had been a fan of Coben's witty lines. But after a few books, I am tired of them. I don't think, I can stand any more of Win's "Articulate!"

Lata, I think you are quite right - Win as a sidekick was a lot better, and wittier, than this Win - and the book is full of "Articulates"!

Beata Good critique of the character, Terence :)) I would get tired of him too ;)

message 6: by Elinor (new)

Elinor Sorry you didn’t enjoy this Terence. I take this as a stark warning from someone who - I got the impression - is rather partial to the author.

Terence M - [Quot libros, quam breve tempus!] Thank you, Beata! Yes, i think you would :)

Terence M - [Quot libros, quam breve tempus!] Thank you, Elinor! Yes, I was rather partial to Harlan Coben but I seemed to go off him a bit. I enjoyed most of his 10 "Myron Bolitar" books and no doubt, if I live until I'm 125, I'll read the other 14 of his novels 😆.

message 9: by Carol (new)

Carol I've been curious about this author because some of his novels are series on my streaming service. Sometimes, I believe that they just run out of story ideas. Great review, Terence!

Terence M - [Quot libros, quam breve tempus!] Thank you, Carol! As I note above in response to Elinor, the Myron Bolitar series was pretty good, with a lot of 4-Stars, a few 3-Stars, but none of the ten I read/listened to was worth a 5-Stars!

Meredith (Trying to catch up!) Uh oh--I have this to read, but your review makes me want to skip it! I appreciate your honesty, Terence! Fabulous review!

Thank you, Meredith, and it's great to see you back 😃!

message 13: by Kay (new) - rated it 3 stars

Kay I liked it a bit more than you did Terence. I didn't mind the narration. But this book made me want to start Myron Bolitar series. 😀

Thank you for your comment, Kay!
I would definitely encourage you to start the Myron Bolitar series, they are all good. I didn't bother with the Mickey Bolitar (Myron's son) series after reading just the one - more YA really. Coben has also written a number of stand alones; many are in my collection, but as yet unread! Nothing new there!

Christine Cranson Excruciating, Win is a narcissist
