The Survivors

Harper excels at creating such an atmospheric novel that even the weather becomes a character. Evelyn Bay in Tasmania is a ramshackle community clinging to the coast. It suffered a terrible storm 12-years-ago that resulted in two drownings and one disappearance. Kieran Elliott came very close to drowning himself, but has lived with the guilt that his poor judgment resulted in his brother’s death. Kieran, his girlfriend Mia, and baby daughter, Audrey are home to help his mother pack and move to somewhere that his dementia-addled father can be looked after. Sadly, it isn’t long before a Holiday worker is found murdered on the beach.
Harper introduces a rich cast of characters as Kieran and Mia reacquaint themselves with their old friends and family. But there are undercurrents at play as furtive glances and half-heard conversations slowly build to a climactic conclusion, revealing long-held secrets. Enjoy.
