it was amazing

Although I gave this book a five-star rating, I have somewhat mixed feelings about it. First, the writing is excellent, at least in the chapters I understood. The problem for me was that the first two parts of the book were pretty technical. I have a degree in physics but you almost need a degree in chemistry and biology to follow some of the narrative. I'm getting older and I tend to like books that are easy to read. But, the final two chapters made the book worth the price. In the next to last chapter he lists eleven things we can do to live longer. Most of these we know (exercise, eat right, get enough sleep, etc.) But for me the real reward was in the final chapter where he writes about metformin, a drug that is used to treat diabetes. Research has shown that the drug may also reduce the risk of cancer and dementia and extend lifespan by a bit. I'm going to call my doctor tomorrow to see if she'll prescribe it!

Joseph Hamilton Did she? I also intend to when I go in for my annual physical later this year.

Duane Nickell My doctor would NOT prescribe metformin, so I went online to find some entity that would. There's a company called "Ageless" that will prescribe it with just some information and a video or phone call. I started taking it about three weeks ago. No side effects so far.

Joseph Hamilton Why wouldn't she?

Duane Nickell She said that there's no data to support it's use for cancer and dementia prevention. I chose not to argue with her. Clinical trials are underway now, but it will be five years or so before they have any results. I'm 63 and don't want to wait.

Joseph Hamilton I'm 67 and will wait if my doctor says to. Have you any other aces up your sleeve when it comes to delaying or turning back the biological clock?

Duane Nickell There is a company called Elysium that has two products for aging. I take Basis for cellular health. They also have a supplement called Matter for brain health that I don't take. I may very well be wasting money; it cost several hundred dollars ($400 or $500?) for a year's subscription. They send it every month. But there's enough science behind it that I think it's worth it. They have a bunch of Nobel Prize winners on their board. You can Google the company and do some research on it.

Joseph Hamilton I take Basis too. I also took their Index test. Steele wrote highly of the accuracy of these biomarker tests.

Joseph Hamilton FYI: The 5/2/2021 issue of the NYT Magazine has a story "Getting to 150" that may be of interest.
