it was ok

I may have been too young when I read this, but I really hated it. My wife and I were struggling with twins, one of whom had severe medical issues, and here's this fountain of hot air who had abandoned his wife and kids lecturing me about "quality". At least, that's how I remember it. Maybe I need to give it a second look.

L.G. Cullens It's not a book for everyone ;-)

I lean more to natural sciences, and liked a snippet from E. O. Wilson's The Meaning of Human Existence, "Philosophers have labored off and on for over two thousand years to explain consciousness (their job). Innocent of biology, however, they have for the most part understandably gotten nowhere."

Left Coast Justin Exactly, L.G.! I think biology does a much better job of explaining the "meaning of life" and why it's so different for cats vs. dogs vs. people.

message 3: by Sue (new) - rated it 2 stars

Sue K H I remember loving the first 3rd or so of the book but then it all going to crazy town. I rated it the same as you did.

Poptart19 (the name’s ren) Ah ha ha, I had to read this the summer before starting college for some freshman orientation course, & I hated it too. But I was 17 so I’ve also wondered if I was just too young when I read it. But it was hard to follow, a bit nebulous & amorphous, & tbh I thought pretentious.

Left Coast Justin Sue and Poptart, I completely agree with you. Honestly, I'm sure there's more to Zen than what I've read, but what I've learned about it so far all seems to come from old white guys with serious personality issues -- not the best salespeople for a new way of thinking.

Stephen the motorcycle maintenance part of the title got me interested then saw the word zen and returned to the shelf. self help books not my thing.

Left Coast Justin Ahhh, if only I'd had your wisdom back then!

Julie G "Fountain of hot air" is right!
(Your original assessment is spot-on, as far as I'm concerned).

Mwanamali I don't think you need to give it a second look. Also, love "fountain of hot air". I will be coopting it, pls and thank you.

Left Coast Justin Julie I didn't notice your comment when you made it, but it appears you had more fun writing your review than I did!
