bookshelves: childrensbooks, historicalfiction, fantasy, uk, timetravel-timeslip, orphans, highwaymen

Edred and Elfrida are the last of their line, the proud House of Arden, and are too young to have previously understood the family has fallen on hard times financially. Once they realize it is up to them to find the legendary treasure that will restore the family fortunes, they embark on a series of magical adventures with the help of the dour Mouldiwarp. Along with Harding's Luck, a related novel, these are my favorite Nesbits.

CLM Yes, Harding's Luck, which I like even better, is the story of Dickie Harding, whom Edred and Elfrida meet on one of their adventures. However, I think one should read House of Arden first. I was discussing these books with a childhood friend last weekend, and we admitted they may not appeal to modern youth. Which makes me sad.

Kate I don't remember these ones. I'll have to check them out. My favourite Nesbits are another pair: The Story of the Treasure Seekers and The Wouldbegoods.

CLM My mother loves Oswald, but I never liked those three (we had a hardcover omnibus edition) as much.

Kate Abigail, thanks for pointing that out. I just did a bit of digging, and Wikipedia lists 5 Bastable books. I wonder if the fact that I can only remember the first two means I never read the final three, or if I read them at some point but they just didn't make the same lasting impression. I'll have to track down copies and see. What a happy venture to embark on!

CLM I think they are short story collections but do not recall if they were stories published in magazines or if extracted from the other books.

Kate I've just done more digging and it seems that the fourth book listed (Oswald Bastable and Others) is indeed a short story collection, not all of which is about the Bastables, and the fifth is a compendium of the other four. So really a trilogy, just as you both said. I've put copies of The New Treasure Seekers and Oswald Bastable on hold at my library and I look forward to seeing if they ring any bells for me.

CLM I've been thinking about this book all day because it is Guy Fawkes Day! Alas, although I just got home, I am not sure which box it is in, so I can't curl up with it as I would like.
