really liked it

Magnificently grotesque. I needed to look away from the page now and then but I felt like cheering all the way through because Bora Chung has written something so brutal and perfect. I was reminded of Poe's Berenice for the body horror, but the author writes meticulously and matter-of-factly, instead of feverishly, a voice that makes these stories all the more disturbing and vividly realized.

Ugh. Yay.

Rosie Sounds horrifying - can't wait to pick it up!

Sookie Sounds amazing. Been waiting for this for weeks.

Paul Fulcher Glad you liked it!

I loved it, Paul. Here I thought Mariana Enriquez and Samanta Schweblin were pulling out all the stops, and Bora Chung goes so much farther than either of those writers.

I'd love to see this collection on the International Booker Prize list next year.

Paul Fulcher Yes I would too. Among my early favourites for that prize in 2022.

emily Brilliant review ! I've been waiting to read this for a while now, and your review just makes me even more excited . Excessively excited... Oh dear . I've been so curious about Chung's and Hur's work ! I can't wait to get my hands on a copy ! I'm glad you think that it's worthy of 5 stars : )

Emily I just wrote in another review that if I see people saying "this book isn't for everyone" then I'm pretty sure it will be a winner for me. This is horror with a sometime-feminist edge, which I'm almost thinking needs to be classified as its own genre, so many women seem to be writing it these days.

Tracey Thompson I read the opening story yesterday, and I loved it. Can’t wait to read the rest.

A tender story about a somehow-endearing problem child! I loved it too.

Elizabeth Arnold I'm reading this now...Just finished the third story, feeling a mix of amused and horrified and spellbound. And I was thinking, I bet Claire would love this. Sure enough...

I love that you thought of me! (And I wish I'd thought to write a story about a baby like the baby in the first story).

These stories have quite a range of feeling, to me. Not the same kind of squicky terror each time. They do remind me most of Mariana Enriquez's stories--it feels like Bora Chung might also have written Enriquez's story "An Invocation of the Big-Eared Runt."

Laura Yes - that is a good observation - that she writes "matter-of-factly" - it adds to the horror. But, do you think it should win the IBP?

message 13: by Lark (new) - rated it 4 stars

Lark Benobi no. it feels playful and audacious but not particularly frep or important.

Laura Yes - audacious - I agree.
What is 'frep' - not familiar with this? Do you mean 'fresh'?
I often make typos when using the phone 'keyboard'.

message 15: by Lark (new) - rated it 4 stars

Lark Benobi yes, ‘fresh, but i’m thinking ‘frep deserves to be a word

Laura Close to 'preppy'? Combo of flippant and preppy - freppy? Could certainly be applied to Cursed Bunny - from my perspective!

Rachel I also found the need to look away at times!
