The Devil All the Time

“Unless he had whiskey running through his veins, Willard came to the clearing every morning and evening to talk to God. Arvin didn't know which was worse, the drinking or the praying. As far back as he could remember, it seemed that his father had fought the Devil all the time.
When Arvin Russell's mother begins to deteriorate from cancer, his father, Willard, goes to desperate lengths to save her. In Willard's mind, only prayers and blood sacrifices can heal her. A police officer who hopes to be the town's sheriff will do anything to win the vote. A want-to-be famous photographer aspires to capture the most heinous pictures. Preachers in this town are anything but righteous.
The Devil All The Time is a viscous, gritty book, devoid of all hope. It's about desperation and the frustration of limitations. Gruesome in the realest of ways, the horror that Pollock weaves into The Devil All the Time is nothing short of what is really happening in our world today. The cast of characters featured in this novel are delightfully messed up, their lives are crushing and oppressive. Pollock brings their explosive stories to life with a real sense of heart. I could not stop reading.
Just Brilliant!

Thank you Pat. I agree. Incredibly compelling 💖👌🏻

It was just amazing. I completely agree. I watched the film last night and I think they did a pretty good job capturing the essence of the novel 💖

Thank you Yun. I certainly did 👌🏻💖

This author intrigues me, but I'm worried he'd scare the crud out of me. Has he written any books that aren't terrifying?!

Haha.. Hi Julie. This is the only book I’ve read from Pollock. I also wouldn’t consider this book as scary (jump scary anyway) it’s more of a vulgar, gruesome, in your face type. Lots of trigger warnings for this one, pedophilia on several accounts, gory murder and cold blooded killing, animal abuse/murder, sexual grooming, torture…the list goes on.
Having said all that, it’s a brilliant book and the ‘bad scenes in this book (there are many) are done so wonderfully. I highly recommend it if you aren’t a squeamish, easily offended reader. I do plan to read more of the authors works. He is a talented man there is no doubt 👏🏻💖

Thank you Sue. I feel the same. I skipped over that bit. The book is worth it. 👌🏻💖

Thanks Rebecca, I'll add it to my TBR and skip that bit, if there was abuse throughout the book then I'd definitely avoid it.

Lots of abuse, but only the one small paragraph of animal abuse. The movie is worse! Damn... 😩💖
