I read and enjoyed Allende in my thirties Jen. I wonder if she would appeal to me still and I am glad she is still a five star read for you !

I didn't love In the Midst of Winter or A Long Petal of the Sea. It sounds like this is the writing I love from her earlier works and I am looking forward to reading this novel.
