really liked it
bookshelves: paper-read, summer-2013, tbr-busting-2013, fraudio, classic, colombia

Many years later as he faced the firing squad, Colonel Aureliano Buenedio was to remember that distant afternoon when his father took him to discover ice.

Also have the audio version read by Patrick Roma. ~16:14mins

After a rocky first encounter this became, as dear friends promised it would, a compelling read. Glad I was propelled into sticking with it, yet can see how this would not be everyone's cup of builders' tea.

Wanda You are on a South American magical realism adventure.

Laura a GREAT book, I hope you enjoy it as much as I did.

message 3: by DMS (new) - rated it 5 stars

DMS I preferred In Evil Hour. The first chapters don't require nearly as much effort to engage.

Bettie Thanks DMS. I WILL get on with 100 when all around is tranquil, however the premise of In Evil Hour looks great - a whole town made of the evil! haha

Laura keep going Bettie, once you go through the plot, you won't be able to stop reading it, believe me.

knig I have failed every time too. It starts off promising, then the characters seem to multiply and spread out and I lose track.

Overbylass I've failed several times too. I was told it would change ny life -I'm not convinced

Bettie I will read it when the time is right. I have some solitary time looming up so will squeeze in some of these reads that will take a good tilt to get me hooked in.
:O)

Wanda I, like, Knig-o-lass, have failed each of the three times I have tried to read this one. I believe it is my mindset -- I just cannot wrap my head around magical realism. And I suffered with too many characters and I kept becoming confused - oh, the perils of old-age, I guess.

Susanna - Censored by GoodReads I've never tried this one. My mother's tried it several times, and just couldn't get into it. (She's not big on magical realism to begin with.)

Bettie It is clever.

Real history with sweeping family saga PLUS fantastical settings and a lot of incest. That could describe the Bible, and A Hundred Years does have that parable quality to it.

Sylvester (Taking a break in 2023) I once saw an interview with GGM where he told of the reaction his had mother to this book - "You can't publish this - our friends will never forgive you!" - she recognized each of the real people the characters were based on, and was sure they would, too. Which amazed me, seeing how deep into magical realism the story goes! This book is a trip like no other! Glad you enjoyed it!

Thanks Esther; it was a trip, a singular journey and I'm more than pleased I came back for another tilt at it.

Jibran Agreed. Not everyone has the capacity to absorb this great piece of art.
