She finds herself facing the backlash of Bayside's CEO, the hospital's transplant team, and Victor Voss. Her career and her life are endangered. She also meets Nina Voss. The decision she made to have the heart go to Joshua O'Day doesn't seem so simple anymore.
Suddenly a new heart appears and Nina gets her transplant. Where did the heart come from? A post-operative infection develops and Abby investigates. She finds that records have been falsified and a black market for transplant organs. The novel also touches on subjects such as assisted suicide.

As a surgical nurse, this is crappy writing. No way that one single resident is responsible for ensuring the organ goes to which patient. There are at least 16-20 individual medical professionals who verify and reverify, over and over, who the recipient and donor are. This is an incredibly complex and important part of what we do in surgery. Rest of the story- fine! Why would this MD choose such a stupid way to launch the action? Shame on her for casting doubt on the real professionals integrity and intelligence
