really liked it
bookshelves: short-story-collections

It took me a while to read these 17 short stories, as I only read one every day or so. I try to read short story collections that way to give each story its due consideration, instead of jumbling them all together. Each story here was about Newfoundlanders, mostly set on Cape Breton with the lobstermen and fishermen and farmers. The landscape was lovingly described, as were the people. All portrayed the elderly men and women who revered the old ways and customs and Gaelic language who had to stand by and watch their children and grandchildren move into a future that embraced change and progress. Which made each story heartbreakingly sad and at the same time, beautiful. Alistair Macleod knows his home and it's people, and lets us into their world. I will miss them, but keeping this book on my shelf in case I need to visit again.

Kerrin Nice review. I am slowly plowing my way through a collection of short stories now.

message 2: by Lisa (new)

Lisa Diane, I like to read short story collections one story at a time as well.
And MacLeod's Cape Breton sounds like a place I would like to know.

Diane Barnes These stories have such a sense of place and time. Short stories are a good choice in between longer books, or when you just have a small window of reading time. I enjoyed every story in this volume.

Charles So glad to read your review, Diane! I was hoping MacLeod would have just the right words to capture your heart like he did mine. :)

Diane Barnes He did indeed Charles. I loved every word.

Sara I love short stories between my longer reads, and like you, I like to spread them out. I'm adding this collection to my TBR. Thanks for the lovely review, Diane.

Diane Barnes I think you'll love them Sara. He's the Wendell Berry of Cape Breton Island.

Sara Well, you know I am in...anyone who approaches Berry is a must for me!

message 9: by Candi (new) - added it

Candi You had already convinced me to read this, Diane, but then I saw your comment to Sara likening MacLeod to Wendell Berry. Wonderful :)

L.A. Excellent review, Diane!!

Diane Barnes Not quite the same Candi, because he doesn't have recurring characters, but recurring types of characters. His love of the landscape is exactly the same.

Diane Barnes Thank you, L.A.
