it was amazing
bookshelves: 17th-century, 2021-reads, allegory, christian, faith, favorites, 5-stars

This is such a beautiful book and a brilliant allegory presented by Bunyan who labored over this while imprisoned for his faith. I read a version with my children when they were young called Dangerous Journey: The Story of Pilgrim's Progress and never had read the original work. This version that I'm reviewing is not actually complete as it only has part 1 which is Christian's story. Part 2 is the story of Christiana, Christian's wife. My Penguin Classics version has this part so I can complete the read fully.

This will be a new favorite and I will look forward to revisiting it next year and each year after that so that the story of Christian's pilgrimage to the Celestial City can stay fresh in my mind. It is a story of a Christian's journey through life and how he seeks that which will lighten his burden but must meet with trials on the way. Christian demonstrates that the road to Heaven isn't easy but in the end the reward of salvation is worth the difficulties he had to endure.

Bridget I've always wanted to read this. I started it in college, but I never finished it. Sometimes I wish I could go to college now. I would be a much more engaged student.

Lori Keeton Thank you Jim!

Lori Keeton Bridget, I know what you mean! This is very readable considering it was written in 1678. I hope you can find time to read it.

Lori Keeton Jillian, I will definitely read her story. It was apparently published later and I’m surprised my beautiful copy didn’t have it. Maybe there is another volume I’ve missed. Christiana’s story is at the end of A Dangerous Journey. I am glad Bunyan completed the family story though!

Lorna A beautiful review of a book that has been on my TBR list for some time. Thank you for reminding me why I need to read it. Thanks, Lori.

Lori Keeton Thank you, Lorna! I hope you enjoy it. It’s just wonderful!

Sara I read this years and years ago and remember feeling a kind of glow when I finished. I have not ever read the second half and I'm not sure I knew it existed...so, another for the TBR. I would really love to revisit this one first. You have written a terrific review for it, Lori.

Thank you so much, Sara! I knew this was going to be my read for this Bingo category and I just hate that I put it off but it has allowed me to find a book that I know I'll revisit again and again. I've never forgotten the version I read with my kids. It has Christiana's story as the last chapter. He wrote it a few years later so it isn't actually part of the original I suppose.

Thanks, Jillian. I bought Testament of Youth and hope to read it next year. I did not know about the biography of John Bunyan. I most certainly will add it!

Lori, you are going to love Testament of Youth, but have tissues handy.

Thank you so much Shirley! I don’t know the book you mentioned. But if you are inspired to read it based on Pilgrim’s Progress, then I will likely need to as well. Going to go look it up.

Shirley (stampartiste) Lori... Gutenberg.org offers an online version of Foxe's Book of Martyrs, published in 1563. It's a book I have had on my TBR for quite a while, and the footnotes in my Penguin Classics edition said that Bunyan was heavily influenced by it.

Thank you Shirley! I just added it. It sounds like a worthwhile read.
