ugh.... I had read Heartbreaking Work and did not enjoy it, but I thought I'd give Eggers another chance. I'm plodding through this book and have been since March. I'm sad about it, because I'm interested by the subject matter. Oh well, lots of people disagree with me, so "you don't have to take MY word for it!"

I completely, completely agree!! Funny thing is, I tried this one first then tried Heartbreaking Work. Both failed me. I'll take your word for it!

I totally felt the same way! I just gave up after chapter six. I don't know why I finished Heartbreaking Work either. I didn't like it either! I guess I'm not an Eggers fan.
Boy the comments and ratings are both end of the spectrum. I am almost done with this book and have loved it from the first page. It's easy reading in my opinion and I have been educated in the trials/sufferings of the many parts of Africa
honestly, some people really get it, but I'm just not one of them. also now I've read Zeitoun and DID love it, so maybe I can get into eggers after all.
