Here's the thing about Penelope Douglas-- I think you either love or hate their books. They have a very distinctive style that's very soap opera-y and edgy and kind of feels like a bird's eye view into what it's like living in a small midwestern town. I bought a whole bunch of their books when they went on sale because I remembered actually liking CORRUPT, but now I'm wondering if that was a false memory because I haven't liked CREDENCE, BIRTHDAY GIRL, or PUNK 57. It's not even that I hate their books; they just make me uncomfortable and kind of squick me out. I know some people like that feeling because they enjoy reading books that push their boundaries and sometimes I do, too, because that's how you think about human behavior and what makes people tick. But all of their books are narrated in first person and their heroines kind of embrace internalized misogyny just a little too much for me to fully get on board. Tate, as a heroine, feels like the kind of girl who pulls up the rope ladder behind her because her girl power comes at the expense of other women. Respect for this being, like, the first major popular bully romance but I just couldn't get into it.

Bahahaha, is the assumption that I'm going to hate it then? :X
I'm SCARED NOW

I want to read it but not until I finish my own bully romance! I don't want to be influenced.

LOL uh oh

I want to read it but not until I finish my own bully romance! I don't want ..."
That makes sense!

I actually did like CORRUPT! But not BIRTHDAY GIRL. xD

Eek lol. I am all about a strong heroine tbh!

I am weirdly fascinated by bully romances even though I haven't read too many of them. I really like The Royals of Forsyth University series (in fact the last book in the first trilogy JUST came out), and of course, Hana Yori Dango was my OBSESSION. Mood is definitely everything with these types of books, though!

..."
well, looks like i have new books to add to my TBR! lol

Yayyyy 🤗

oooh what a great title!!!! thanks for the rec!!

Yeah I would have liked CREDENCE more if a different guy was endgame

Same! I think they have great ideas but their execution doesn't always pan out.

It has so much potential! But it's hard being the "first"

Yeah! I'm sure there were earlier ones but I think this is the most famous western one. There were a lot of 90s shoujo mangas with bullying as a theme though. I love Hana Yori Dango.

Ahh! I have a soft spot for the K-drama because it was the first adaption I saw after the anime. BUT YES! METEOR GARDEN! Did you ever see the anime movie where they're at a dancing school? It's so weird but i kind of loved it. The 80s flashdancing is just so hilarious.
Yeah, the manga is definitely dated. I grew up with it so it makes me feel nostalgic, although I'm old enough that when I was reading it, not all of the books were out in English so some of the ones I read had been translated by fans (who did a better job in some cases than the hired localizers). I only own books 1-6 but I need to buy more of them. It gets soooo crazy later on in the series.

Yeah, I think some of their later books are better (lots of people liked BIRTHDAY GIRL and I remember guiltily enjoying CORRUPT), but this one had too many things that grated my nerves for me to enjoy it, even though I normally like dark romances when done well.
FYI! The author changed their pronouns pretty recently and now goes by they/them. I had to double-check because my edition of one of their books still used female pronouns in the bio.

I just looked and it looks like the trailer is gone. All the fanvids are what's left LOL. Maybe they're trying to get rid of the evidence. ;)
Idk if it's still up there but they were planning on making THE SELECTION into a TV show and the actress who plays the fiancee of that rich guy (Rafael?) in Jane the Virgin was the lead (America Singer). It opens with a Ellie Goulding song and is also just as bad as you'd expect. I think they tried to sweep that one under the rug as well but I REMEMBER.

I did NOT but now I must see that asap.

I was looking for something to binge on Netflix!
