De zaak Styles (Hercule Poirot, #1)

The first Poirot novel.
I’d say this is a good introduction to both Agatha Christie as a writer and her most famous character. The concept is really good. The execution is good too, though not as refined as it is in later Christie stories. This one also has a pretty slow pace. Lieutenant Hastings might be the POV character but it’s Poirot who dominates the scenes. It’s unfortunately also a bit noticeable when Poirot’s not in the scene.
Honestly, I’d recommend starting with another Christie novel if you haven’t read any of her work yet, as she has a lot of good ones to choose from and almost all of them can be read as standalone books, even if they’re part of a series. Though if you like to start from the beginning, this definitely isn’t a bad book.

Well, I would definitely not say this is a bad book. It’s already pretty good. But she did get better as a writer after writing her first novel, which is something most authors will probably recognize. Thanks, Barbara.

While I do prefer reading series from the very beginning, Poirot and Discworld are definitely exceptions in that regard for me too.

Reading out of order has its perks. :P
