it was amazing

What is it about London that makes it the prime place to create another world, not hidden in the shadows, but accessible through secret passageways that tend to close tight behind those who stumble in? Neil Gaiman's Neverwhere jumps to mind, which China Mieville (I don't know how to do the accents!) credits as an inspiration, and now Un Lun Dun.

Although I guess the other example that I can think of, J. Michael Straczynski's Midnight Nation, is set in the States. Never mind. And in this book, UnLondon isn't the only city hidden behind another city. There's Parisn't, for example. And Lost Angeles.

Deborah I hope you will try his other books. I would say start with the New Corbuzon novels, not The City and The City, which is wonderful in ways, but more work and less entertainment than his other books. I love that he wrote The City and The City. I don't know how to explain this. I don't think he succeeds as well as he does in other books, but it's interesting to see him reach for something elusive and new. He is experimenting there. (Ok, sorry, I'm kind of on a tangent.)

What I mean is, Yes! Read Mieville.

Megan Baxter I definitely will! He's definitely been added to the list of authors I will follow.

Jonathan Peto I have Neverwhere, which I'm probably going to read very soon, and was planning on reading Mieville at some point. May just be this one. Thanks for the review.

Michelle {Book Hangovers} I love both Mieville and Gaiman! Neverwhere was an excellent book, full of mystery! And this book was just fun and adventurous! With characters that will forever be a part of my life!! I can't wait to read their other books. Mieville and Gaiman are on my list of authors to follow, right next to Clive Barker

Jonathan Peto This one is very close to the top of my list!
