Vale Cormac McCarthy 1933 - 2023
This is a story of a man and a boy, a father and son, wandering cluelessly in a post-apocalyptic world. They walk on the road pushing the rusty shopping cart filled with stolen food and provisions from abandoned homes and shops whose owners have long died. They seek a safe place to sleep and eat: in the woods, on the beach, on the roadside in the freezing temperatures and rain, and sometimes in filthy abandoned houses.
Cormac McCarthy certainly has a very unique way of writing. The Road is written in a very simple way but with such incredible power. I enjoyed the structure of the book and the use of either long sentences or very short ones. Yes, no, nothing, okay etc. I didn’t even mind the lack of grammar.
Reading this I could feel the loneliness of a dead world and the intense connection of two people who are afraid of losing each other. It made me think about a world where there are no human beings left and what is life when everything you ever knew and loved was destroyed and incinerated.
I’m so glad I finally read this.
“You have to carry the fire."
I don't know how to."
Yes, you do."
Is the fire real? The fire?"
Yes it is."
Where is it? I don't know where it is."
Yes you do. It's inside you. It always was there. I can see it.

Thank you David 💖 I will admit that I found this very hard to read at times and I did get teary at the end. It definitely had similar vibes to Pet Sematary. I don’t have/want children but reading this I kept thinking how this book would be especially difficult for a father or a parent to read. Having said that, I know that I would do the same to protect my family if it ever came to it. Let’s hope it never does 🙏🏻💖

It’s great isn’t it. I wasn’t sure at first but I ended up really loving it 💖

Yes. And I also love the absence of quotation marks lol. My favorite dialogue written by McCarthy is the one between Anton Chigurh and the proprietor from No Country for Old Men :D

Oh wow I haven’t read that but I’ve seen the film. It’s brilliant. Javier Bardem is amazing! I should get the book. My next McCarthy read will be Blood Meridian. Probably not until next year though 😄💖

Excellent review!

Thank you Pat. I don’t think I could bring myself to watch the film. The book was enough! 😫😄💖

Thank you Sarah! This book is so unique. It’s not your average post apocalyptic story. No zombies, but there are enemies and other survivors. It’s not scary, it’s sad, lonely and heart wrenching. You will feel suspense and fear for the man and the boy. It’s one of the best books I’ve ever read 🙏🏻💖

My pleasure beauty. I hope you enjoy if you end up reading 💖💖

Thank you Rowan. This book is definitely worth the read. Don’t feel guilty. Still plenty of time to read his books 🙏🏻💖💖
