This One Had Me Hooked

Set in Cuba, The Old Man and The Sea is about an old fisherman named Santiago. He has not been lucky lately with his fishing, and he is all alone in the world save one little boy. Will Santiago’s luck turn?

This book had me hooked from the beginning (sorry I couldn’t resist). But seriously, this book gripped me from the beginning. It is definitely a tearjerker. The Old Man and The Sea is deeply moving and filled with symbolism. This is a perfect example of an author showing instead of telling, and what a beautiful masterpiece!

Overall, a deeply moving novella that I can’t wait to read again.

This book is one of James Mustich’s 1,000 Books to Read.

Barry Medlin Wonderful review Lisa! This is one of my all-time favorites!!

Alan (the Consulting Librarian) Teder Fabulous review Lisa! I've read this several times (I'm a bit of a Hemingway nut) and enjoy it more each time. My last read was The Old Man and the Sea: The Hemingway Library Edition with added early drafts & content + I recently started Hemingway's Widow: The Life and Legacy of Mary Welsh Hemingway which notes that Mary Welsh (view spoiler).

Thanks, Alan! I learned a lot about Hemingway in the last day or so. When I was in Paris, I saw a cafe that Hemingway would frequent so I assumed that he was French. Well you know what they say about making assumptions! He was actually American. He also had a friendship with F. Scott Fitzgerald, one of "admiration and hostility." After reading The Great Gatsby and loving it, Hemingway decided that his next work should be a novel. These literary friendships always fascinate me because it shows how one person can influence literature for all time.

Colin Baldwin Keep this to yourself, please Lisa, but I’ve never read an Hemingway! I know, I know how is that possible? I could list many excuses, including being out off by a negative critique way back about chauvinism, but recently watched a doco which in the most part dispelled this. So when I get to my first Hemingway, seems like ‘The Old Man and the Sea could be the one, eh? INSERT WINKING FACE. CB

No worries, Colin! This was my first foray into Hemingway myself. It's a quick read, only 92 pages.

Kristy I read this book in high school. The teacher thought it was boring, and so did the class after they read it. I'm sure the fact that teacher didn't like it had a decent amount to do with that. I found it fairly boring. I've been thinking of reading it again sometime, because the circumstances under which I read it (I was also incredibly ill at the time) where much less than ideal.

The audiobook really brought this book to life, when you can hear the old man and his weariness. Hopefully, the re-read will be a better experience!

Peter Great review, Lisa. This one's an unforgettable classic. Love it. All the best Peter

Tim Glad you enjoyed this! It's one of my favorite books, which is rather interesting as I haven't really been able to get into the other Hemingway novels I've tried.

Harry Turnbull tend to agree with Nabokov in that the style is not brilliant but rather juvenile.

Lisa Nice pun!

Peter Lisa, I’m glad you were “hooked and what a fabulous reading schedule! By the way: who is James Mustich?

Lisa of Troy Love this question, Peter! James Mustich wrote a book called 1,000 Books to Read Before You Die (or something very close to that). It is an AMAZING secondary resource! The book has author information, and each book has about a 1 page little blurb, year of publication, similar books. I simply love the little blurbs because it gets me so excited to read the book, and it kind of orients me to the text. It also makes me "appear" so smart because I can drop random facts into my review like oh yeah I just randomly know the date these works were published. lol

Peter Lisa, thanks for the information. That sounds like a really useful book!
