Where is my anticipated 5-star, gushing review?

My expectations were way too high.

For decades I’ve looked forward to reading this classic, and on the whole it has let me down.

I accept Doctor Zhivago has won awards and accolades, and many ŷ users have joined in with this. I truly wish I could do the same, but this novel left me quite confused and cold.

I googled Boris Pasternak and his novel to help me fully realise what I did and didn’t understand in the plot. I plan to watch the acclaimed David Lean movie adaptation and this may give me a better perspective and lighten my misgivings.

And here’s my main concern: the famous love triangle at the centre of this book was unconvincing. What have I missed?

At times, I also found the politics and revolutionary ideology difficult to follow. Sadly, some of the dialogue was ‘clunky and strange. Perhaps this is a result of deficits in translation?

Seven minutes could be told over more than one page and yet seven years fleetingly within one paragraph. I usually respond well to this style of time jumps, but for some reason it baffled me within this text.

There is no doubt Boris Pasternak offers some remarkable, poetic narrative, such as the sweeping pastoral and desolate landscapes, often adding to a sense of loneliness, and bringing the fierce Russian winters to the fore. These aspects worked well for me and are worthy of praise, however disappointingly not enough to elevate it to a higher rating.

There is a part of me that believes (and hopes) a re-read may yield a different appraisal.

Rowan MacDonald Great review as always, Colin! I often hold back on reading some of the classics, for fear I'll just never "get" them or enjoy them like everyone else. Weird how seven minutes could get multiple pages, yet seven years a paragraph! I'd be curious how you find the film in comparison.

Thanks Rowan. I will reflect on this book (and my review - and beat myself up a bit!). Yeah, I'll give it a while then hunt out the movie. Cheers CB

Bianca Great review, Colin. I haven't read it yet.

Thanks, Bianca. Please don't let my lacklustre review put you off. Many have given it big stars. Cheers CB

Jenna ❤ ❀ ❤ I haven't read this though I watched the movie years ago and recall that I liked it. Perhaps not enough to want to read the book though... I hope if you decide to re-read it, you'll get more out of it and enjoy it more.

Clare Walker Interesting, this one has been on my to-read list for a while, also with high expectations. Will see

Armin My first Rating (1987) was also 3*, DS sandwiched between Anna Karenina and Brothers Karamazov contributed to the low rating. Knowing Pasternak and the merits of his style better I appreciated the qualities of the novel last year much more and gave 5*. Take your time and read it again some years later

Vielen Dank, Armin. Good advice. Hopefully I have enough years left after reading so many books on my 'to read' list. Mal sehen. Cheers from CB

Don't let my review put you off, Clare. For many out there, it is a masterpiece. Give it a go and I'll be interested to hear how you feel about it. Cheers CB

fourtriplezed I sometime think the star system is a bit pointless. I just hand a few 5-star reviews out that are a bit "time and place" reads for me. I suppose on the other hand, when I give a 1 star review I mean it!

Mikey B. Great Review
I only know of the movie, which I saw ages ago. Think I would find it overly melodramatic today.

message 13: by Jodi (new) - rated it 5 stars

Jodi Oh no! That's such a shame, Colin! Dr. Zhivago has always been one of my very favourite novels (and films)! But, I suspect that if I were to re-read the book now - with the mind-set of a 66-yr-old👵 rather than the 18-yr-old👧 I was - I might give it much less than the 5-stars I gave it "way back when".😟

It is a shame, Jodi. I've been mulling over my review for a few days... I think it stands. It's a lesson in 'not getting expectations too high', I reckon. Despite that, I look forward to watching the film. Cheers CB

Brett C Great review, Collin! You hit on a lot of points I also encountered in reading. Loneliness definitely was a factor that was seen in the characters and mimicked in the environmental descriptions. On to the next read for the both of us!

message 18: by Murphy (new) - added it

Murphy C I have kept a copy for years (what a movie! Omar Sharif is magnetic) that I have never gotten around to reading, and now, I might not! 😅

message 19: by Murphy (new) - added it

Murphy C But only because I think I would be irritated by the same bits that you were!!

message 20: by KayKay (new) - added it

KayKay I always have known the movie is very different than the book. Just like most Russian lit, I expect Doctor Zhivago would be long, physiological, and some politics involved. Unfortunately, the Hollywood created such a beautiful and romantic version of the movie. I was told before the love triangle wasn't the main focus. Hopefully when I decide to read this masterwork I wouldn't be disappointed. :)

message 21: by Morgan (new)

Morgan Never read the book but did see the movie (twice) and also a biography on Pasternak - both excellent. Not surprised that you found the book lacking. Your review says it all.

Margaret M - (having a challenging time and on GR as much as I can) Excellent honest review Colin. Pity it didn’t meet your expectations

I know, I know... I had my hopes building for decades about this book. I so glad I haven't received any blasting messages - I see that sometimes happens, but GRs should be a safe platform for all views to be aired.

Thanks, Morgan. Yes, I did watch a bio on Pasternak a few years ago too, and found that very interesting.

Dona's Books Hi Colin! No, but I'm looking for a copy for my library now thanks to your review! Going to see if I can get it through Kindle Unlimited

Peter I read it as a teenager and was enthusiastic about it, also because of the poems in the end of the book. They displayed Pasternak’s true mastership of language.. Were they included in your edition, Colin?

message 34: by kubelot (new)

kubelot Great Review Colin. I have the german translation of Doctor Zhivago on my pile of shame, for like forever, but i'm afraid it won't meet my expectations. Unfortunately this happens to me very often, so i tend to skip all "bestsellers" and "mustreads" ;)

Lorna Nice and heartfelt review, Colin. I have not read this yet but viewing the movie years ago certainly left me cold!

Colin Baldwin Lorna wrote: "Nice and heartfelt review, Colin. I have not read this yet but viewing the movie years ago certainly left me cold!"

Thanks Lorna. I'm hoping to watch the movie one day - just out of interest. Like the novel, it's had mixed reviews.
However, I seem to be in the minority with book disappointment.

Jennifer (JC-S) I read the book after seeing the movie, and while I loved the book, I suspect I was in just the right mood for it. A very good review, Colin. You explain your reaction well.

Richard Thompson One of the problems for many people is that they have been led by the movie to think that this book is a love story. It is true that it includes a love story, but it is really about the place of the artist in society. Yuri is a bit of a weakling, not such a good guy in some ways, not always the ideal lover to Lara, but because he is an artist, we need to forgive him and shelter him. This is why he has Strelnikov as his guardian angel. When you read the novel this way, you can see why it drove the Soviets bananas. It is a deeply counterrevolutionary message and is the opposite of what socialist realism was supposed to be about.

Thanks Richard. Only just saw this comment.
You appraise it well. I wish I had had you level of understanding of the inner workings of this novel.

Martha I’m on page 190 and I am not liking this book. His writing is clumsy, bizarre-not smooth at all. Switches from scene to scene erratically. (Or as you say- it could be the translation.) I am reading Manya Harari and Max Hayward- who are supposed to be excellent translators. I don’t think it is the translation. I will slog through it because it is a classic, but it is a mighty struggle.

Martha P.S. I have not seen the movie - so I went in fresh.

Joe Krakovsky I understand your bits of frustration. I personally think part of the acclaim was for the topic. And I think this is true of many books as well.

Hello Martha
Have only just read your comment (stumbled upon it after a GRs friend posted a comment). I'm wondering if you got through it? And you thoughts?
