It feels like I´ve read all this before. I know Chile´s history well, and Allende includes practically everything, with no depth to anything. It's as if she needed to mention every major event;it feels forced. And then there's the stereotypes. It's also detached, as other reviewers have pointed out, and at some point, it becomes predictable.
Having loved The House of the Spirits, and a couple more by her, this is a letdown.

As you always say, different readers, different tastes. Maybe you´ll enjoy it, but her earliier ones are much, much better.

If you haven't read her previous works, "The island beneath the sea" (history of Haiti and Louisiana) was her last good work, same as all her previous ones "House of Spirits"her first one, Eva Luna(many stories), "Daughter of fortune" and the sequel " Portrait in Sepia" (History of California), "Ines de Alma Mia" history of the founding of Chile. I would read all these books all over again, the main character traps you , always this amazing woman that would stay in your memories for the rest of your life.

Thanks Beatrice!
