This book owned me today, completely owned me.

I just have to give S. U. Pacat a huge round of applause. I was 100% drawn into "Captive Prince". It is going to be hard to write a review of just Volume 1 because I read them back to back like a rabid fan-girl so I'll just review them together. It was like my eyes were glued to my phone today. I wouldn't and couldn't stop reading.

I won't rehash the plot because the overview doesn't sound terribly interesting or new. It is the masterful, smart writing that sets this book apart. The writing is so crisp and fan-freaking-tastic that it gives each word the power that it is due. Details sing in all the right ways.

The way the author portrayed Laurent in the beginning made me think I could never sympathize with him. It is through truly skilled writing that little facts play out just as they should over time and reveal Laurent's character in new lights. We learn hard truths along with Damen and I felt my point of view morphing as his did. I was entwined with Damen and felt deeply connected to his story and his emotional and physical journey.

The book is a study in deception and human emotion. It grips you until the very end. Book 1 set the stage for book 2, which just brings everything to a head. There are no missteps. It is like a ballet dance of words, and I don't think I'm being too complementary or over-exaggerating. Book 3 will be my most anticipated release of next year (if that is when it will come out)!

Ooh, you finally got around to reading this! =D So glad you loved it too!! I just hated Laurent in the beginning too! My feelings towards him went through such a huge turn-around. I can say now he's one of fave anti-hero characters. I actually am holding off on starting book 2, because I know there's a mean cliff hanger, and there's still no news on book 3!

I second that!

Slashreader Hi Heather,

I share your enjoyment of The Captive Prince -- I read it before it was published, when we had to wait, not-so-patiently, for each new installment. But if you like Laurent, you do realize he is very, very strongly based on Dorothy Dunnett's amazingly wonderful Lymond? S. U. Pacat herself gives credit for her inspiration: "The Western writer I admire most is [Dorothy] Dunnett, and Laurent's antecedent is Lymond." So, if you are impatient for the third book of CP, may I recommend you give "Game of Kings" a try? I am a _huge_ reader, and I can say with no hesitation at all that she is my favorite author, and Lymond is my favorite character.

Hi! I just saw this... no I didn't know that! I have to read her books, I have never read any Dorothy Dunnett!

Kelly (Maybedog) I'm confused about this book. A lot of people listed this as BDSM but it sounds more like people are abused sexually and that the D/S stuff is about slavery. Could you explain it to me? I'm a freak in that I have trouble when the BDSM is consensual but I can handle abuse as long as it isn't condoned.

It isn't really BDSM, not to me. It is more like real slavery. It is tricky to define. There is a lot of non-cons stuff but it isn't a book with a lot of sex on page. Ugh, I'm not doing a great job describing it. It isn't like consensual BDSM though.

Kelly (Maybedog) I read it. I wouldn't call it BDSM at all. I really liked it, but I was upset that this really is just part one of a serial. Is there ever a happy ending?

AtomWriter Ugh; this series really made me angry. I loved the writing, the story and the characters. BUT; I swear she literally cut up one whole manuscript. It made me so mad that I didn't finish the series. Like both books just ended in the most random way. Which also made the pacing weird between the wait for each book. I dunno. I will probably try to re /read now that the titles are available as an omnibus. (I only made it through the first 2, the third was not out when originally reading.)
