There comes a time when I just have to accept that despite a writer being widely loved and appreciated, they're just not my cup of tea. First published in 1999 this loosely connected (smoke, mirrors and magic) collection of short stories and verse(!) simply passed me by, and I only continued reading it because it was Neil Gaiman, and they were short stories. Out of the 35 shorts in this book only 7 of them managed to get 3 stars or more from me. No doubt those (many of you) that like Gaiman's work will enjoy this, although I should also add that there's a fair amount of explicit sex in several of these shorts, which is not something one usually gets from Gaiman. This will probably be my last ever Gaiman read - he's just not for me! 3 out of 12

I don't think that there will be any more Neil Gaiman for me!

Yun I'm not sure Neil Gaiman is for me either. I read his American Gods long ago and didn't get it lol. I did love his collaboration with Terry Pratchett though. Maybe I'll give him another try one day, but it won't be this book lol! ;)

Same here Yun, I read American Gods, which although one of my favourite Gaiman's I was underwhelmed in regards to the general consensus about it.

Blair I've enjoyed his novels in the past but, I too, am struggling with one of his short story collections.

Cheers Blair, it's interesting to find someone feeling the same about his short form work :)

Nura Lou I didn’t like American Gods, so I guess this wouldn’t be my cup of tea either!

Definitely not your cup of tea Nura!

Morgan Well said Baba! I have to agree just because an author is 'widely loved and appreciated' they are not necessarily my cup of tea either.

Annan I find Neil Gaiman's short stories to be pretty bad, and I like a lot of his novels. For me, this best book is Neverwhere, which I believe is the first novel that he wrote. It was the first book of his I read, and I loved it so much I read most of his subsequent novels. Still, Neverwhere is the best. Give it a read!
