I got a few chapters in and decided this wasn't for me. Right out of the gate it seemed like there was going to be a lot of complaining about misogynistic men and the women they keep down.
I get it. Really.
But for whatever reason, my kneejerk reaction was Christ, this is going to be one of those whiny books and I just flipped over to an old Agatha Christie I had borrowed from the library.
If this is your jam, I mean no disrespect. I just didn't know what I was getting into.

Laurence Giliotti I clicked "Like" on this review because you didn't hesitate to call it "quits." Excellent for you. I always tend to trudge on, simply because I've invested the effort to acquire the book. Now that I am at an age when time has become a most important consideration, I often reflect how much further along I would be had I just walked away from books and people, as soon as I suspected they were not for me. Contributing nothing to my understanding of the world, providing no intellectual challenge or stimulation, and adding not the slightest hint of humor, much less laughter, to gray afternoons should have been immediate cause for dismissal. An outdated commitment to being a gentleman has wasted large portions of my life. No regrets...Just observations.

Anne I feel you, Laurence. I used to trudge on, as well. Life's too short. I'm sure a lot of folks will like this book but I could tell it would have just gotten on my nerves.

Krystina So I have been reading more of this kind of novel... And then deciding that I need Agatha Christie to cleanse my brain. (I try not to be bothered by historical inaccuracies, but...) There's something soothing about authors like Christie.

(And I don't necessarily disagree with *some* of what's being presented in Collins's books. Yes, history has not always been kind to women. But if I'm reading a historical novel, I'd generally like my characters to think and feel a little like they belong in their time period.)

Anne SAME.

Quenby Caro is mighty annoying.

Anne Love your review, Quenby. I think I made the right choice for myself.
