really liked it

I don't read many graphic novels - at most 2 or 3 per year, and don't really appreciate the format - I find it difficult to read and look at the pix at the same time - but HAD to tackle this to 'honor' its recent banning by the TN. school board, on the grounds their students MIGHT find it 'upsetting'; I mean, g-d forbid the killing of 6 million innocents should disturb their tiny little brains any! {}

In a way, the story follows a known, typical template - how many variations on the horrible events of the Holocaust and survivor aftermaths can there really be? And. much like his son (the cartoonist's doppelganger, Art), I found the character of the father Vladek to be irritating, with his Yoda-speak. But the story is certainly compelling - it is odd that it ends so abruptly, but on to part two.

Royce Great review, Doug. Because the writer, Speil

Royce Ugh!! Sorry, as I was saying …the writer never expected it to be used in schools to teach middle school
kids about the horrors of the Holocaust. He wrote it, he said or I read as a way to better understand his father and his past experience, surviving the concentration camps.
There is so much satisfaction in reading books that are banned.
I look forward to seeing what you think
of part 2!?!☺️

James I've never read this, but I'm so glad it's seeing a resurgence in readers and sales as a big middle finger to those trying to ban it from schools. Are they going to try banning Shakespeare next? The Bible? Because there's plenty of "disturbing" sh*t in those texts as well.

Meike WHAT? The TN school board banned "Maus"??? This is infuriating.

Yep - the site doesn't allow hyperlinks in the comments section, so I added it to the original review, if you want to take a look!

Thank you so much for the link, Doug! This decision is insane, I just added the topic to the news section of our literary podcast, hosted by three German anti-fascists.

Laura Reading banned books is so popular at our local library we went from celebrating them 1 week to a whole month each year.
