I thought her name sounded cheery, plus I heard about her prayer journals so I would never have thought she would be that morbid, lol! Oh well, I've learned my lesson :)

I'm not sure I get the relevance of the title, though. Anyone want to take a shot at explaining it?

I think it has to do with (view spoiler)[ the Grandmother's disdainful attitude towards the way things are today. Her son's not a gentleman, the kids are rude--the grandmother is from another generation and remains stubbornly beholden to it. Red Sammy, the restaurant owner, says 'a good man is hard to find' when he's also bemoaning the lack of politeness today.

When the misfit shows up and does his thing, the grandmother suddenly switches and swears she sees good in him, that he's one of jesus' children and he's a good man. It's like her moment of grace before god, she's been redeemed and wants to show this bad man that he can be, too. The misfit however has rejected god and cannot be redeemed, so he rejects the grandmother's embrace by shooting her.

Funny story, when O'Connor first published this story, she received a number of letters from men claiming they were 'good men', with the intention of courting her to prove it! (hide spoiler)]

Thank you! I recommend 'Good Country People', 'The Barber' and 'A View of the Woods'. Her novel Wise Blood wasn't as effective for me as her short stories, but it's a decent read as well. Enjoy!
