** spoiler alert **
This book was not what I expected. I came out of ReDawn, full of anticipation, eager to find out what happens next to Jorgen and company. I figured, since we’re back to Spensa’s POV and the main storyline, we’d see her in the nowhere (where we left her in Starsight) and have her make her way back; back to my beloved Skyward Flight. (I thoroughly enjoyed seeing the crew again in the novellas after a protracted absence in book 2.)
Boy, I was not prepared for Spensa spending the entire book (!) in the nowhere. Instead of seeing Skyward Flight, Spensa joins yet another flight crew - her third now - and I was already weary of that plot device in book 2.
So I guess it all boils down to my false expectations. Had I not gone into this picturing this very differently, I might have loved this book from the start. (But this is clearly my own fault. I should have done my research.)
Thankfully, the revelations in the final 15% and the awe they inspired changed my perspective on the entire book and I came to retroactively appreciate it. (Minus the involvement of another flight crew.) I’ll have to re-read this and fully expect (here we go again) to enjoy it a lot more this time around.
I’ll have to rate it 3.75 for now - the lowest of any of the books in this series so far. But on the bright side, the final 15% leave me fucking thrilled for Defiant, the conclusion to this series.
1 Skyward: 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟
2 Starsight 🌟🌟🌟🌟.25
2.1 Sunreach 🌟🌟🌟🌟.5
2.2 ReDawn 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟
3 Cytonic 🌟🌟🌟.75
