Sometimes you find a book at exactly the right point in your life. I was fortunate enough to read Have Space Suit - Will Travel when I was a geeky 12 year old boy, and I loved it. If YOU'RE a geeky 12 year old boy, there's a fair chance you'll love it too! He enters this cut-out-the-coupon-and-complete-the-slogan competition (a lot of description of how he intelligently maximizes his chances) and wins an old ex-NASA space suit. He fixes it up, and there are some great passages showing how much fun it is to be able to walk around in your own space suit. Then he gets abducted by aliens, one thing leads to another, and as usual he ends up having to save the human race. It's definitely one of the best examples of this genre.

If you're NOT a geeky 12 year old boy... well, nothing's impossible, but you probably want to read something else instead.

Steve Diamond I read it when I was a geeky 11-year-old boy. Loved it then and I still think it's a great story.

Manny I am glad to hear that you're still faithful to your childhood favorites! Maybe it's better than I thought - I haven't looked at it for at least 35 years...

Becka I read it when I was a geeky 8-year-old girl (can you be geeky at 8?) and I daresay it may have changed the course of my personal history. My first foray into science fiction/fantasy, and I haven't looked back. :)

Manny Wow, Becka, you must really have identified with Peewee! Did you get the timing right on that one!

Aimee I wish I read it as a young geeky girl instead of a middle-aged geeky woman...

Manny Sorry Aimee... we can't all be as lucky as Becka!

Alan I read it as an ancient old man, but it put me in the frame of mind of a 12 year old. So I really enjoyed it

Manny I'm glad to hear it hasn't lost its charm! I still remember it fondly...

Nina I first read this as a geeky 9/10 yr old girl, and usually re-read it about once a year or so - security blanket style. Just handed it over to my non-geeky 13 yr old girl, and am happy to report that she's enjoying it, too :)

Manny Nina, you should write a short story based on your shared Heinlein experiences! Do you and your daughter have different takes on Peewee's character?

I was probably a 10- or 11-year-old geeky girl, and it was my intro to SF as well!

Manny Heather, it's a good thing I'm no longer 12. I'm sure I would immediately have asked you to marry me, and I just don't see a marriage based on a common admiration for Heinlein's novels working out.

Vanyo666 Not a geeky 12-year old boy by now, by any standards, but I must say I am enjoying this book a lot! Juvenile space opera, yes. But also very well written and thought out.

Manny Hey, I'm glad to see that this book's appeal is broader than I'd thought!

Guess it appeals to the geeky 12-year-old in me, never too far from the surface!

message 16: by James (new)

James I think I was about 12 when I read it too!
