The Death of Ivan Ilych

What you find in this rather short book are thoughts about what is or maybe is not important in life. Ivan seems to have it all, but he learns that he will die in the near future. So, looking at what he has, his family, friends, his house, his career, he wonders what went wrong, realizing that he has not had the fulfilled life he should have wanted. Instead, most of his life appears to have been somewhat empty and shallow, and it takes some time for him to come to terms with what he has lived.
On the surface this is a short narration about Ivan looking at his life. But it actually is a rather philosophical discourse about a fulfilled life, and Tolstoi gives us some ideas what such a life could look like. I don’t believe that I can do this title justice in any form, because this is actually one of the titles that you can return to in different stages of life and find something that fits the situation you find yourself in. However, kudos for a brilliant narration that impressed me with its philosophical depth and stylistic quality.
5 out of 5 stars.
