Want to read a book that is full of bragging and humblebragging? Here’s a great option that fits the bill! Reading this was like sitting across a table with an interesting person, only to realise that he finds just one topic interesting: himself. Pompous prig alert! 😬

What Richard Feynman wanted me to learn from this book:
1. Richard Feynman is fabulous at physics.
2. Richard Feynman is fabulous at mathematics.
3. Richard Feynman is fabulous at biology.
4. Richard Feynman is fabulous at picking up girls. (He “loves beautiful girls.)
5. Richard Feynman is fabulous at unlocking safes.
6. Richard Feynman is fabulous at playing musical instruments, even live on stage.
7. Richard Feynman is fabulous at learning new languages (or at least pretending to.)
8. Richard Feynman is fabulous at coding and decoding ciphers.
9. Richard Feynman is fabulous at dancing.
10. Richard Feynman is fabulous at teaching.
11. Richard Feynman is fabulous at sketching and painting. (Not surprisingly, he loved to draw nudes best.)
12. Richard Feynman is fabulous at Mayan anthropology.

There are many more things Richard Feynman is fabulous at but these are all I remember now.

What I didn’t find in this book:
1. Details about Feynman’s family except for a barebones mention of his parents and sister and a few paras on his three wives whenever they are a part of his anecdotes about how fabulous he is.
2. Details on anything Richard Feynman wasn’t fabulous at, beyond a few paragraphs.

Bonus points I learnt about Richard Feynman
1. Richard Feynman was cocky.
2. Richard Feynman loved to hear himself talk about himself.
3. Richard Feynman treated women as objects and judged them entirely on their physical merits.
4. Richard Feynman considered anyone who didn't understand physics, an idiot.
5. Richard Feynman loved playing pranks on others, whether it was funny to others or dismaying didn’t matter.
6. Richard Feynman was full of attitude and with zilch gratitude.

The only part of the book I enjoyed without getting judgemental was when he spoke of being in a textbook evaluation committee. If you want advice on how to be better at your chosen scientific discipline, jump straight to the last chapter. That’s the only one having content bordering on advice.

I still respect Richard Feynman the physicist, but as a human being, he dropped vastly in my esteem. He must have been an outstanding scientist and teacher but hardly any glimpse of that comes out in this book, which is more of an ode to himself by himself.

Do you remember the Gaston song from ‘Beauty and the Beast? This is how Feynman would have probably sung it:
🎜 No one's slick as Feynman, No one's quick as Feynman,
No one's head is as incredibly thick as Feynman,
For there's no man in town half as manly
(Perfect, a pure paragon!)
You can ask any Tom, Dick, or Stanley
And they'll tell you whose team they prefer to be on.

Who plays darts like Feynman? Who breaks hearts like Feynman?
Who's much more than the sum of his parts like Feynman?
(As a specimen, yes, I'm intimidating!)
Who has brains like Feynman, Entertains like Feynman,
Who can make up these endless refrains like Feynman,
(I use antlers in all of my decorating!)

Who's a man among men? Who's the super success?
Don't you know? Can't you guess?
Ask his fans and his five hangers-on
There's just one guy in town who's got all of it down 🎝

And here’s where I’ll interrupt his 'Ode to Myself' and jump in for the grand outro, yelling:
🎜“Surely you’re joking, Mr. Feynmaaaaaan!!!!”
**insert musical crescendo here!**

Canadian Jen I think I’ll take a hard pass on this one. Hope your next one is better!

Lori (on hiatus, life is crazy busy)) Fantastic review Rosh! I don't think I would like this one 😂

Rosh Jen wrote: "I think I’ll take a hard pass on this one. Hope your next one is better!"

Good decision, Jen. I really need a 5 star book after this one! 😬

Rosh Lori wrote: "Fantastic review Rosh! I don't think I would like this one 😂"

Thanks, Lori! Good call... I ground my teeth all the way through it. Gaaah! 😬

Melissa (Always Behind) No thanks! But thanks to you for your fantastic review!

Dorie - Cats&Books :) This sounds absolutely horrible, thanks for the warning :)

Sujoya - theoverbookedbibliophile I remember this being highly recommended by my colleagues when I was working in academics. Great review , Rosh! I no longer feel guilty for having not read it.😊

©hrissie ❁ [1st week on campus-somewhat run-down] Oh my, I wonder how you managed to get to the end? Excellently delivered review, Rosh!

Ushashi Oh dang, Rosh! Love this review. Sadly great scientists are not always great people.

Srivalli Rekha Oh, man, I'm laughing so hard! Rosh, this is just too good. It has such glowing reviews (just checked), but no thank you. I'm happy living under the rock and pretending this book doesn't exist.

Ellie Spencer (catching up from hiatus) I think I would struggle to read this one so much, it's a no from me! Thank you for your wonderful and honest review Rosh! 🧡

Ditto for me, Sujoya. I had such high expectations after everything I had heard. But the disaster begins right from chapter 1. You didn't miss anything. 💕

All thanks to the audio version, Chrissie. I would have thrown my book at the wall had I been reading a physical copy. He was simply disgusting in his attitude towards women.
Thank you! 💕

Rosh Ushashi wrote: "Oh dang, Rosh! Love this review. Sadly great scientists are not always great people."

So true, Ushashi! I had only Einstein's treatment of his first wife as a big example of this, but now I feel Feynman is at the same level, maybe worse.

Good to know that.
Not good to know the other one. :/

PS: The request for the clockwork queen got declined. :(

message 23: by Anushree (new)

Anushree Nailed it with the Gaston song parody! Gosh, I haven't laughed so hard in a long time! This review is so fragrant of theme of toxic masculinity central to our BOTM. Being competent, even beyond excellent is no excuse for being an insufferable snob.

Oh! I was so sure you would get it! Barrington Stoke always comes through for me, even if late.
If it helps, the Donal Ryan book that you suggested is still in my pending requests after all these days. Random House UK is never a sureshot for me. :/

Thanks so much, Anushree! Glad I could spread some laughs. 😃
Toxic masculinity is the right word for this fellow's behaviour. I have never been so irritated with a scientist ever since I watched the depiction of Albert Einstein's life on "Genius". Wonder why so many people are ready to let his attitude go just because he was intelligent. 😒

message 26: by Bharath (new)

Bharath Gosh, what a review Rosh! Pompous narration is irritating for sure.

message 27: by Rosh (new) - rated it 2 stars

Rosh Bharath wrote: "Gosh, what a review Rosh! Pompous narration is irritating for sure."

It was, Bharath. How such a reputed scientist could gloat about such silly things as pranking a poor waitress or disclose that he chose rooms where he could peep into the opposite building that hosted women's quarters is all beyond me! He seemed almost self-congratulatory throughout. I just hated this experience.

message 28: by Bharath (new)

Bharath I agree Rosh, very condescending. A well known book, now thankful I missed reading it.

message 37: by Niharika (new)

Niharika Wow, this has got to be my favourite review of yours! Loved your parody of Gaston! I was hoping to start this one because, well, I love physics and he's about the most famous so-called "cool" physicist, but after reading your review, I think I'll gladly pass.

Haha, thanks! 😉 But I am very much the outlier on this, Niharika. That said, if you want to read it mainly for the physics content, I'd suggest you read something else written by him.

message 40: by Nora (new)

Nora Currie This same situation happened to me one time at my uncle’s house. We just met his friend and he was only interested in talking about himself and he never once asked any questions about us or why we were visiting. I had to leave the porch because he would not stop talking about himself and I informed my mom he was the most annoying person I have ever met in my life.

Such people are truly annoying! I guess it comes from their inflated ego; they genuinely believe that they are fascinating even if we find their talks a snoozefest. I hope you didn't meet that friend of your uncle again. Once seems to be more than enough!

Jonathan O'Neill :O
Omg, I think this is the first time I have to hard disagree with you, Rosh! *sheds a tear* :D
I found his character so endearing and down to earth after reading this! I also watched a lot of videos of his and listened to some lectures and found him to be simultaneously genius and regular larrikin!
Oh well, we can't win 'em all! :)

*passes a tissue box!* :D
Sorry, Jonathan, but I guess we'll just have to agree to disagree on this one. :D
'Down to Earth' is the last quality that came to my mind while reading this. Some of his pranks were not endearing at all. I believe that if any joke/prank ends in someone feeling hurt, it is not funny.
Glad you enjoyed it though. Every books deserves a happy reader. :)

message 45: by Chantel (new)

Chantel Based on the first sentence of your review alone, my answer is no lol I will surely not be going out of my way to check for this one....it sounds like a big old waste of time & truly painful. Kudos to you for writing such a wonderful review about such a dreadful book!

Thanks so much, Chantel! I doubt most modern women would appreciate his ideas of what counts as fun. It was an infuriating book.

Nika Excellent review, Rosh! I liked this book a bit better than you did, but I very much agree with your comment about the last chapter. It was this last part that I enjoyed most. Overall, I expected more from this read, in terms of content and in terms of enjoyment.

message 48: by mansi (new)

mansi I laughed out loud at this, he was indeed all of the things you said in this review. I have Feynman's lectures on physics, all the three books of it, in my "to read someday" collection, bought during my graduation days. Interestingly those were the first lectures ever to be tape recorded and then transcribed. One article I read in the Marginalian (previously Brain Pickings) by Maria Popova came to mind, where he wrote a letter to his dead wife - it was hauntingly beautiful. So I had a lot of expectations from this book, but seems like I'd have to tone them down. Thank you for your review!

David Hahaha yea its all true but he sure did some amazing science...
