it was amazing

Mon Dieu! What an exposé! French Canada shame.

Quebec in the 1950’s under ‘the fervent Catholic Premier Duplessis brought about the shameful condition whereby orphanages were turned into mental institutions simply to get more money from the Government. And surprise-surprise these institutions were run by guess who? The Roman Catholic Church.

This is the story of pregnant unwed 15-year old Maggie who is sent off to her aunt and uncle to have the baby to save the reputation of her parents as well as prevent her from having a relationship with the baby’s father who Maggie’s parents think is not good enough for her.

The baby is supposed to be put up for adoption and hopefully go to a good family. However, that is not what happens.

Maggie gave her daughter the name Elodie as she was being taken away and it was Maggie’s father who made sure the baby would keep the name.

This is the dual story of Maggie and Elodie. Maggie tries to move on with her life as her parents want her to do and Elodie’s story of her life in the orphanage up to age seven and then “Change of Vocation Day where orphans in Quebec were designated as mental patients and treated as such.

This is heartbreaking but more shocking because it is all based in fact!

Terence M - [Quot libros, quam breve tempus!] A very good review, Morgan!
The RCC has much to answer for and its shameful deprivations of life and liberty in "orphanages" have taken way too long to come to light.

Thanks Terence. Reading this at a time when in the news there are reports of unmarked graves being found at so-called residential schools run by the RCC I can't help but wonder how God feels about all this being done in His name.

Joe Krakovsky Great review, Morgan. Another true but horrible thing for a church to be doing.
