This was a beautiful family saga constructed around the second Sino-Japanese war. Obviously well researched, this story taught me a lot. Though of course some parts were tragic, this felt well-balanced: despondency never really got a chance to take root. There was always hope, joy, and life even in bleak circumstances.

Jennifer, I'd love to know how they differ - is Millionaires less well balanced in your opinion? I am planning on reading it but have really gone off the "over-tragic" books. I mean they seem to be all the rage, but they are so depressing!

Thank you Mark.
