** spoiler alert ** This is a story about the artist not his art. The plot is practically nonexistent, contrived purely so Jules Verne can demonstrate his extensive scientific knowledge.
Four men are air-balloon wrecked on an uncharted, uninhabited island in the pacific ocean. The island has every vegetable, animal, and mineral resource to be found anywhere else in the world. The four castaways, who never once disagree with each other or say a cross word, colonize the island with nothing more than their knowledge, intelligence, empty pockets, and bare hands. Within a couple of years they manufacture metal, glass, bricks, animal farms, windmills, boats, a telegraph, batteries; gun powder, you name it they got it!
And by the time you reach the end of this long tedious book, after having learnt the names of all the hills, rivers, lakes, bays, forests; botanical names for all the trees, animals and insects; mineral and chemical names for every lump of rock they trip over the whole island blows up and vanishes into the ocean.
A waste of time

James Hold There's a story of three men picked for a test of surviving on a deserted island. An English gardener is put in charge of providing shelter. A French chef is given the responsibility of keeping them fed. A Chinese merchant is in charge of supplies. No sooner do the three land on the island than the Chinaman disappears. Ten years later the scientists return to see how they've made out. Astonishing, the English gardener has establish a large farm growing every kind of crop, built a large manor home and constructed a highway system. The French chef has constructed silos for storing grain, built a modern day kitchen, invented cooking pots and utensils. "This is amazing," the scientists marvel. "But what about the Chinaman? You say he's been missing for 10 years." And just then, the Chinaman jumps out from behind a tree and yells, "Supplies!"

Martin Hi James,
One reviewer once said that Vern's stories were better thought about than read.
