Now I know why I don't read more Russian literature. However, to be fair, I can understand why the readers of 1859 would consider this their most popular novel by Turgenev. Tragic melodrama of ruined lives would have appealed at that time, in that place.

Jennifer ~ TarHeelReader So true, Diane. I hope your next read is much more rewarding.

Sara I'm about half through and not entranced. I happen to like Russian literature, but I have to take it in small doses.

Diane Barnes I was happy it was a short one.

Anne As Sara said, small doses is the right amount for me as well I guess that means that I will never read War and Peace.

Sara OH NO, Anne. War and Peace is an exception. It never bored me for a second!

Anne Sara wrote: "OH NO, Anne. War and Peace is an exception. It never bored me for a second!"

Sara, I was joking. I think. I'm glad to know that enjoy every second of it. I read very long books all the time but somehow this one seems daunting.

Diane Barnes Sara is right Anne, War and Peace is the exception. I always figured I'd read it in "The home" when I had plenty of time, but I loved every word and was never bored or frustrated. When a member of my book club assigned it, there was almost a mutiny.

Anne I can just imagine the mutiny in your book group. Gave me a laugh. :)).

Okay, Sara and Diane. I have made a promise to myself that I will get to it this year. Thanks both of you for your encouragement.

Kathleen Maybe Turgenev is not for you, but I'd put Anna Karenina with War and Peace as a page-turner, so you may want to try that too if you haven't already!

Diane Barnes I've read both of those and loved both of them, Kathleen. I'd like to read each of them again at some point. Tolstoy is head and shoulders above the rest of them.

Sara I also agree. I love Tolstoy and those are his two best works.

message 12: by An Imaginary Cat (new)

An Imaginary Cat I'm quite reticent myself. They have some great stories, but most books from back then steer towards 20 pages of description for each isolated line of dialogue.
