really liked it
bookshelves: audiobooks, tbr-available-at-my-library, hoopla, biography-autobiography

I'm about to whine a bit... I've borrowed this audio book from my library and am thrilled when our local public library makes such books available. It is a long book and I'll say a dense book. There is history, and theology, and biography, and names - oh, so many names to try to keep track of. I've had to renew it twice which wasn't a problem- until last week. I tried to renew and received a message that the book was no longer available at my library. Yikes! The message said to go to the library and speak to a librarian and 'express my interest'. So I did that. To no avail.

Not only is this book not available but about 3/4 of my library FAVORITES (books that I have made a list of that were to be read sometime in the future) are no longer available . I thought the library had been hacked. Now when I put murder mystery in the search engine instead of a Commissario Brunetti story or a Louise Penny book; I get a list of Boxcar Children books. I. am. not. kidding.

The librarian at my local library branch couldn't provide any answers as to what has happened. She suggested I write to the Main Branch Librarian (which I have done - no response yet). I am at a loss. If I want cheesy romance, horror stories, or children's books (not classic children's books mind you); they abound at my library. But the books that I want to read are gone.

The librarian at my local branch said she could do an inter library loan for me and she found this book on CD from another branch. She seemed annoyed when I told her that I don't have a CD player and even if I did; it's difficult to carry one around on my evening walk when I listen to the book (or listen in my car). I am truly at a loss.

I am still hoping that someone hacked my library's Hoopla app and they will figure this out and go back to providing good books.

UPDATE: Hooray, my library has this book back and is available on Hoopla! Not just this book but many others that I had on my wish list. It makes me so happy to have such a resource available!

That sounds so lovely! I am bereft here in South Florida... the library keeps banging on about 'banned books' and here they have essentially banned 75% of my reading list by eliminating the books on it. Children's books and Cliff notes type books are available but it seems anything of substance is gone.

Dee Miller I have felt the same loss here in northwest Florida. I am surprised and pleased that there is a wealth of books available on my Audible Plus membership, including many by Bonhoeffer! It seems like we might be living in an America that resembles the Germany he endured.

Dee, your observation about the parallels between Bonhoeffer's Germany and our country ring true.

Thankfully, my library (the Hoopla app in particular) has brought back more of the books on my favorites list. The Bonhoeffer book is now available again and I've renewed it. Thanks for being my ŷ friend!

Sara So glad that got straightened out. It is virtually impossible to buy all the books you want to read, the library is a must!

Fran Hawthorne How can we support our libraries? By donating money, of course, and also by checking out and requesting books! (Even if we don't read them.) I'm sure that someone is tallying those data points as an indication of public support.
PS When I donate to my library, it gives a list of categories that donors can specify. such as: Children and Teen Programs, a general Books & Materials, and Books Unbanned. I always choose Books Unbanned, as a reassurance that my contribution will go to the kinds of books that might not otherwise be purchased.

GOOD FOR YOU, Fran!!!!!!!

Sara, I'm relieved it's all sorted. In downsizing, I came to realize that I didn't have room for all of my books, so I became quite dependent on my library! It thrills me to have such a resource available. And I am embarrassed to admit that I reacted like a petulant child when the books that I wanted were taken away!

Fran, if borrowing books indicates my support - then I am a huge supporter of my library. And my renewal of books (so I can finish them) takes my support to the next level.

Evidently my library was re-assessing the books that they offer on Hoopla. And now the books that I have on my wish list are available again. Whew. I do not understand however, the library offering so many 'Summary of...' books. If I want to read 'How to Herd Cats'; I want the entire book (primary source). I don't want to read 'A Summary of How to Herd Cats'.

Your idea to request or suggest books is a good one! Thank you for reminding me that my tax dollars are providing such a valuable resource.
