did not like it
bookshelves: ebook, 2014, adult, mystery

This book was meant to be a horror and I can safely say the only thing scary about this book was how totally fine people seemed to be about rape. I can handle unlikeable characters, I've read and enjoyed American Psycho and The Wasp Factory, but the way rape was treated in this book was complete abhorrent to me. I don't know if it's a cultural thing? Although I doubt it.

Other than that I was just completely bored by this book, I don't know if there was something lost in translation or not but the writing was repetitive and bland. It also suffered from a lot of telling and not showing. There was no build-up, no suspense at all, which is pretty unforgivable in a horror novel.

I found myself dreading picking this book back up each time, I was just so frustrated and bored by it all that I had to give myself a pep talk each time I attempted it.

Should you read this book? Nah, spare yourself the pain and try some other Japanese literature instead.

Mao Yea, rape and all the misogynistic and sexist behaviors really bothered me while reading the book. I hate to say this but I feel it's kind of cultural.
Both sexism and misogyny run much deeper in Japan than, say, in US or European countries. Although it's slightly improving now--I hope it is, in the 90's, I think many men were rape apologists--at least that's what I know from books in that time. You must've noticed how wives in the novel take orders from their husbands; that sadly hasn't changed much to this day.

I hope you get to read some better Japanese novels next time :)

baka_usagi Lol. Do you even finished the book? Ryuuji raping 3 girls is just a lie.

It was still treated as completely fine for the vast majority of the book. The characters attitudes towards the event is still relevant and it still bothered me the way the subject was handled. Also it's not made clear if he actually did it or if he was lying to befriend the protagonist.

Sarah COMPLETELY agree, hon.

Ashley I agree with you completely.
