I really loved this one!
Who knew that a grumpy octopus and a 70-year-old uptight widower would worm into my heart so easy?!
I’m super impressed that this is a debut novel by Shelby Van Pelt. If this is the type of books she’ll be writing in the future, I’ll be picking them all up.
I’ve loved octopus my whole life and also live in the Pacific Northwest.
The setting in the book is in the Seattle area so I knew that I had to give this book a try. I feel like Van Pelt got both things down with the details of octopuses and location.
Remarkably Bright Creatures has three points of view in the book.
✔️ Cameron, a 30-year-old guy who just can’t figure out life, love or how to adult. He was a freaking mess at times and I had to have a bit of patience for this character.
✔️ Tova, a widower who cleans the Sowel Bay Aquarium at night. She lives a solitary life and has had painful and tough circumstances happen to her.
✔️ And then there is Marcellus. He’s a four-year-old giant Pacific octopus that’s lived at the aquarium his whole life.
And these very different points of view eventually come together. It was well done and had me tearing up a bit at the end.
I loved the magical realism in this book and all the themes in the book from grief, unconditional love, to friendship.
Definitely get to this one if you need a uplifting story that will wrap you up in six arms and two legs of tentacle love!!

I hope you love it Rachelle! I was not expecting to read it this fast and love it as much as I did. :D

Thanks so much Catherine! I kind of felt the same about a book about an octopus too. 🤣😂
